March 1, 2013-The #13 Emporia State softball team has dropped consecutive games for the first time in over a year as they lost at Midwestern State 10-9 and then fell to #23 Abilene Christian 3-1 at the Courtyard by Mariott/Midwestern State Invitational in Wichita Falls, Texas on Friday.
The first six batters of the day reached base in the matinee for the Hornets as they took a 3-0 lead over the host Mustangs after half an inning. Midwestern State answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. MSU took the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the second and went ahead 8-3 with three runs in the fourth and a solo homer in the fifth.
The Hornets retook the lead with six runs in the top of the sixth. Amanda Self and Taylor Reichard had back to back two RBI doubles to highlight the inning and give Emporia State a 9-8 lead. Karly Schmelzer then sat the Mustangs down in order in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Zordel reached base with one out in the top of the seventh but was stranded at first to leave the Emporia State lead at one run.
Schmelzer got the first batter out in the bottom of the second before giving up back to back singles and her first walk of the day to load the bases. Another walk forced in the tying run before Elena Bennet got the game winning RBI with a single.
Amanda Self was two for three with three RBI and a run scored to lead the Hornet offense. Tricia Vogel and Taylor Reichard each had two RBI while Taylor Zordel and Stephanie Goodwin each scored two runs. Schmelzer went the distance in the circle for the Hornets giving up ten runs on 17 hits in 6.1 innings pitched for her first loss of the season.
The #23 Wildcats opened the second game with two runs in the top of the first. The Hornets cut the lead in half when Amanda Self was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Two batters later Katie Huffman doubled her home to make it 2-1 after five innings. ACU scored an insurance run in the top of the sixth and after a lead off single by Zordel in the bottom of the inning, the last six Hornets were retired in order.
Lauren Sharp took the loss giving up three runs on six hits with seven walks and two strikeouts. The Hornets only had three hits with Huffman getting the only extra base hit and RBI.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday as they take on Oklahoma Panhandle State and a rematch with Abilene Christian in Wichita Falls, Texas.
