Hornets score 20 in matinee before falling 6-4 in nightcap

February 24, 2013-The #12 Emporia State softball team exploded for 20 runs in a 20-1 win over Cameron in game one of a double header before falling 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap.

The Hornets jumped in front early in game one as Taylor Zordel led off with a single and went to third on a double by Andrea Piezuch.  Stephanie Goodwin then delivered her first of two home runs to give Emporia State at 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish. After giving up a solo home run in the bottom of the second, the Hornets put 11 runs on the board in the top of the third to blow the game open. The inning was highlighted by a two run homer from Goodwin and a three run shot from Cacy Williams. Emporia State then added three runs in both the fourth and fifth to reach 20 runs for the first time since a 24-0 win over Minn.-Crookston in 2007.

Karley Scmelzer won her seventh game of the year allowing three hits with two strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

Game two saw the Hornets fall behind 2-0 in the second thanks to one hit, an error, hit batter, walk and fielder's choice. Bradie Schmelzer hit a solo home run in the third to cut the lead in half. Emporia State went ahead 3-2 on Williams RBI single and a sac fly by Taylor Reichard.  Cameron tied the game in the sixth and Goodwin gave the Hornets a 4-3 lead with a lead off homer in the seventh. The Aggies tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and got a two run, two out home run for the walk off win.

Sharp took the loss allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Hornets are scheduled to go to Wichita Falls, Texas to take part in the Midwestern State Tournament on March 1-3.
