February 23, 2013-The #12 Emporia State softball team hit six home runs on the day in a double header split at #2 Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday in Durant, Okla. The Hornets won game one 11-2 before dropping the night cap 8-2.
Taylor Zordel led off the first game of the day with a home run to give Emporia State a 1-0 lead. Two batters later Tricia Vogel hit a solo homer to make it 2-0 Hornets. Taylor Reichard made it 3-0 with a one out round tripper in the second. Emporia State got three unearned runs in the fourth highlighted by Andrea Piezuch's two RBI single to take a 6-0 lead.
Karley Schmelzer did not allow a hit through the first 3.1 innings when she gave up two runs on four singles. Reichard answered with her second homer of the game, this one a two run shot, to make it 8-2 in the top of the fifth. Stephanie Goodwin ended the hit parade with a three run shot in the top of the sixth for an 11-2 lead. Schmelzer stranded two in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the run rule win.
Reichard was two for three with three RBI and three runs scored and was hit once. Goodwin was one for three with three RBI while Piezuch went two for four with two RBI and a run scored. Schmelzer allowed two runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts to improve to 6-0 on the season.
The Hornets did not get a base runner until Katie Huffman's one out single in the third in the nightcap. Lauren Sharp matched the zeros on the scoreboard until the bottom of the third when Southeastern Oklahoma took a 2-0 lead on a walk, single and double.
Neither team scored in the fourth or fifth inning. Zordel led off the top of th sixth for Emporia State with a single and then scored on a two out single by Vogel to cut the lead to 2-1. Southeastern Oklahoma then scored six runs on two singles, an error, two doubles and a two run home run in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-1 lead. The Hornets would get a lead off homer by Cacy Williams and a single by Reichard in the top of the seventh, but that would be all as Emporia State dropped their first game of the year 8-2.
Williams was two for three with a double and a solo home run while Vogel went one for three with an RBI. Sharp took the loss giving up eight runs, seven of them earned, on 12 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The #12 Hornets will travel to Lawton, Okla. on Sunday to play a double header against Cameron. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
