February 16, 2013-The #18 Emporia State softball team pounded out five home runs in two wins on Saturday at the Seven States Classic hosted by Ark.-Monticello in Bentonville, Ark.  The Hornets defeated Ouachita Baptist 7-2 and Southern Arkansas 3-1 to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Stephanie Goodwin, Tricia Vogel and Cacy Williams all had two hits and two RBI in the matinee against OBU.  Williams hit a pair of solo home runs while Goodwin had a home run and a double and Vogel had two singles.  Karley Schmelzer was awarded the win in relief of Lauren Sharp.  Sharp gave up two runs on five hits in four plus innings. Schmelzer came on with a runner on base in the 5th and retired the final nine batters she faced.

Schmelzer extended her string of no hit innings to start the season to 13.0 before giving up a pair of singles in the fourth inning of the night cap.  Her string of scoreless innings reached 15.0 before a lead off homer in the top of the sixth by Southern Arkansas.  The Hornets already had two runs on the board by that time thanks to back to back doubles by Amanda Self and Williams in the fourth and a solo home run by Taylor Zordel in the fifth.  Taylor Reichard would add an insurance run with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. Schmelzer allowed one run on three hits with 11 strike outs in the second game.

The Hornets will wrap up play at the Seven States Classic on Sunday against Southwestern Oklahoma State and host Ark.-Monticello.  First pitch against SWOSU is set for 9 a.m. with UAM to follow at 1 p.m.
