February 17, 2013-The #18 Emporia State softball team pounded out 22 hits on Sunday as they finished the UAM Seven States Classic 6-0 with a pair of wins on Sunday. The Hornets defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State 8-4 and then took care of host Ark.-Monticello 4-2 in eight innings.
Playing as the visitor in both games, the Hornets jumped out in front early in each game. Taylor Zordel led off and scored on Stephanie Goodwin's RBI single in the first. Cacy Williams led off the second with her third homer of the weekend for a 2-0 lead and Zordel made it 3-0 with an RBI ground out.
Southwestern Okla. got on the board with a run in the third and took the lead with three runs in the fifth off of Lauren Sharp. Karley Schmelzer ended the threat with a pop out, strike out and ground out. Emporia State retook the lead on Andrea Piezuch's two run triple and made it 6-4 on Goodwin's RBI double. Katie Huffmann put the finishing touches on the win with a two RBI double in the top of the seventh.
Schmelzer picked up the win in relief giving up one hit in three innings with five strike outs.
In the nightcap against the host Cotton Blossoms Zordel again got things started with a run in the first inning. She reached on an error and would eventuallycome around to score on Amanda Self's ground out. The Hornets scored another unearned run in the second when Jessica Brewer scored on Piezuch's single following Zordel reaching on another error.
Schmelzer took a shut out into the seventh when UAM scored two runs after starting the inning with an error to tie the score and send the game to extra innings. Huffman led off the top of the eighth with a single and would be driven in by Goodwin. Tricia Vogel gave the Hornets an insurance run with an RBI single to center.
Working her fifth game of the weekend, Schmelzer picked up her fifth win allowing just one earned run while scattering eight hits. Goodwin had three hits to lead the offense.
The Hornets will travel to Edmond and Choctaw, Okla. next weekend for five games.
