February 15, 2013-The #18 Emporia State softball team did not allow an earned run as they opened the season with a pair of victories at the UAM/7 States Classic in Bentonville, Ark. on Friday. The Hornets edged Southern Nazarene 1-0 and then run ruled Henderson State 11-1 to start the season.
Karley Schmelzer tossed a no hitter with 11 strikeouts in the win over Southern Nazarene, but did hit five batters and walked three of the Crimson Storm. The Hornets scored their lone run in the second inning when Tricia Vogel singled, went to second on a passed ball, to third on a ground out and scored on a second passed ball.
Taylor Zordel was two for two with four RBI and Andrea Piezuch went one for three with three RBI as the Hornets run-ruled the Reddies in the second game. Lauren Sharp went all 5.0 innings allowing an unearned run as she struck out five with no walks.
The Hornets continue play in Seven States Classic on Saturday against Ouachita Baptist and Southern Arkansas.
