HORNETS ARE #7 SEED
Emporia State returns to the MIAA post season tournament for the first time since the 2011 season. The Hornets are the #7 seed and will travel to Tahlequah, Okla. to face #2 seed Northeastern.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets played Central Oklahoma to a 0-0 scoreless double overtime tie to clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament. Freshman goal keeper Yadira Rivera had four saves.
THE COACHES
Bryan Sailer is 15-28-10 in his third season at Emporia State and ranks No. 2 on the Hornets all time win list. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season and was named Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Barton to an 18-4 record. He is 0-3-0 against the RiverHawks.
Chase Wooten is 46-18-98 in his fourth season as head coach at Northeastern State. He is 3-0-0 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
The Hornets are 8-7-3 overall and 4-4-3 in the MIAA. The Hornets are 1-0-1 against nationally ranked teams this season. ESU upset #19 Regis 2-1 in double overtime earlier in the season. The Hornets then played #5 ranked Central Missouri to a 0-0 tie in double overtime. Emporia State has a program record nine shutouts on the year. The Hornets return to postseason play for the first time since 2011.
KNOW THE FOE
Northeastern State is 15-3 overall, 8-3 in the MIAA and have won four straight matches. The RiverHawks will be making their second straight appearance in the MIAA Tournament. Northeastern defeated Northwest Missouri 2-1 in the first rounds and then fell to Central Missouri 1-0 in the semifinals.Â
LAST TIME VS. NORTHEASTERN
Northeastern defeated the Hornets 2-0 on November 1 at DeLoache Field. Northeastern got second half goals from Lindsey Lotta and Elizabeth Cudjoe to knock off the Hornets.
LAST TIMEÂ IN MIAA TOURNAMENT
Emporia State lost to Northwest Missouri 4-2 in the 2011 MIAA Tournament. The Bearcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Jessica Decker and Sarah Anderson scored for the Hornets.Â
GOALS AT A PREMIUM
Both Emporia State and Northeastern have set program records for shutouts in a season. The Hornets have had 10 clean sheets in goal, while the RiverHawks have held opponents scoreless 11 times in 2013. Yadira Rivera has a goals against average of 0.80 and nine shutouts for ESU. Jordan Woodruff has a 0.60 goals against average and 10 shutouts.
MIAA SEMIFINALS AND FINAL
The winner of tonight's match will face the winner of #3 Southwest Baptist and #6 Lindenwood in a 7:00 p.m. semifinal match on Nov. 8. The semifinals and final match of the tournament will be contested at the College Boulevard Activities Complex in Olathe, Kan.
