Hornets tune-up for MIAA Championships with pair of run rule wins

April 23, 2012-The #14 Emporia State softball team tuned up for the MIAA Tournament with a pair of run rule wins over Newman on Monday night.  ESU won the first game 9-0 and took a 16-2 victory in game two, both of them in five innings.

Trica Vogel hit a grand slam in the third inning of game one to break a scoreless tie.  Stephanie Goodwin made it 5-0 in the fourth with a two RBI single.  Amanda Self led off the fifth with a homer before the next five Hornets reached base. Taylor Reichard singled and would later come around to score on a wild pitch.  Andrea Piezuch drove in the final run for the Hornets with a single.

Vogel was one for four with four RBI and the grand slam. Piezuch was three for four with an RBI and two runs scored.  Karley Schmelzer threw a two hit shut out with eight strike outs for her 15th win of the season.

Taylor Zordel's two RBI single in the second got ESU on the board to start game two before the Hornets exploded for ten runs in the third inning. The first 11 batters reached base in the third inning with one out coming out on a fielder's choice.  Self started the scoring in the frame with a three run double.  Jennifer Heerey then helped her own cause with a two run triple and beat the throw home when Gifford reached on a fielder's choice to make it 9-0. Goodwin hit a two RBI double, Vogel had a sac fly and Goodwin scored on a wild pitch to close out the scoring in the inning. Zordel hit a three RBI homer in the fourth to put the Hornets up 15-0 and ESU got their final run when Goodwin reached on an error and would later score on another error.  The Jets got their first runs of the day on two singles sandwiched around two walks and a ground out.

Every batter reached base for ESU led by Zordel's three for three effort with five RBI and two runs scored.  Self was one for three with two runs scored and three RBI while Goodwin went two for four with three runs and two driven in.  Heerey picked up her tenth win of the year, giving up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings in addition to her own two run triple at the plate.

ESU begins the MIAA Tournament on Thursday against Lincoln in Overland Park, Kan.  First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at the Blue Valley Recreation Complex with a second game against either Washburn or Central Missouri set for 8 p.m.
