April 14, 2012-The #16 Emporia State softball team ran their winning streak to 12 games with a double header sweep of Lindenwood in non-conference action at the Trusler Sports Complex.  The Hornets defeated the Lions 6-0 in game one and 2-0 in game two.

After Karley Schmelzer sat the Lions down in order in the top of the first, the Hornets wasted little time getting in front in the matinee.  Andrea Piezuch led off with a single and came around to score on Stephanie Goodwin's double to left.  Goodwin would later score on Amanda Self's single and ESU would lead 2-0 after one inning.  The Hornets addd another run in the fourth thanks to three errors by the Lions. Kendra Gifford reached on a fielding error, went to second on a wild pitch and after Taylor Reichard walked, came home on a throwing error by the catcher.

Tricia Vogel had an RBI single in the fifth and then scored when Self reached on another LU error to give ESU a 5-0 lead.  The Hornets final run came in the sixth when Taylor Zordel reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored as Piezuch reached on another fielding error by the Lions.

Schemelzer did not allow a hit and faced the minimum over the first three innings as the only base runner was picked off by Self.  She did not qualify for the win, however since she only pitched three innings.  Lauren Sharp picked up her ninth win by pitching 4.0 shut out innings, allowing only three hits and was just one below her season high with five strikeouts.  Goodwin was one for two with two runs, a double and an RBI in the first game.

The second game took a bit longer for the offense to kick in as the game was scoreless through the first three innings as the two teams were only able to combine for two hits in that time.  Jessica Gragg gave ESU a 2-0 lead when she drove in Vogel and Self with a two RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth. That was all the offense the Hornets would need as Jen Heerey tossed her second straight shut out, allowing just two hits while striking out seven and walking no one.

The Hornets are back in action on Sunday as they wrap up the home portion of the schedule with their final MIAA games of the season.  ESU will play Lincoln beginning at 1 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex.  Although they have already clinched a share of the MIAA regular season championship and the top seed in next weekend's MIAA Tournament, the Hornets have a chance to claim the outright title and become the first team to go through a full round robin regular season schedule undefeated.
