March 9, 2012 -- The Emporia State softball team from behind three times, twice in the second game to earn an MIAA opening sweep at Central Missouri. ESU overcame a 2-1 deficit in game on to earn a 5-2 win and overcame deficits of 2-0 and 6-3 to win 7-6 in game two.
In game one Tricia Vogel got the scoring started with a home run to lead off the second inning. Central Missouri would answer with two runs in the fourth inning to take their first lead. The Hornets would get three runs propeled by a Stephanie Goodwin two run single to take the lead for good. The Hornets would tack on an insurance run in the sixth as they rolled to a 5-2 victory.
Andrea Piezuch went two for four at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Goodwin finished two for four with two runs driven in while Amanda Self went two for four and drove in one run.
Karley Schmelzer went two 4-2 in the circle pitching a complete game four hitter allowing only one earned run and striking out eight.
In game two Central Missouri jumped on twop early taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Emporia State would answer in the fourth taking advantage of four UCM errors to take a 3-2 lead in the ballgame. Central Missouri would regain the lead with a four run fourth inning for a 6-3 edge. ESU got four runs behind a Goodwin two run double in the fifth inning to go ahead for good in the 7-6 victory.
Goodwin was one for three in the game with two runs scored to go with her two driven in. Vogel went two for four with one runs driven in. Taylor Zordel was two for three with one run scored. Jessica Brewer and Amanda Self each added two runs scored for the Hornets.
In the circle Jennifer Heerey overcame four unearned runs to earn her fifth victory of the season striking out six in a complete game.
The Hornets will travel to Southwest Baptist for a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch on March 10 from Bolivar, Mo.
