Hornets Travel to UCM and SBU to Open MIAA Play

ESU Game Notes

LEAGUE TIME  
The Hornets open the MIAA portion of their schedule on the road against Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. ESU has won nine of the last ten MIAA openers with the lone loss coming in 2009 at former MIAA member Neb.-Omaha.
 
LAST AT BAT
Emporia State ended their stay at the Best Western Premier Spring Fling with a run rule win over Quincy in Denton, Texas. The Hornets got on the board early in the 11-1 victory over the Hawks.  ESU scored one in the first and then plated four in the second to take at 5-0 lead. Jessica Gragg and Taylor Zordel each had two RBI singles in the second. The Hornets added another run in the third and put the game away with five more in the fourth.  Taylor Reichard delivered the knockout blow with a two RBI double. Gragg went one for three but had four RBI for ESU while Reichard and Zordel each went two for two with two RBI. Karley Schmelzer earned the win, giving up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
 
THE?COACHES
Julie LeMaire is 8-6 in her first season at Emporia State and is 100-83 in her fourth season as a head coach. She came to ESU from Ft. Hays State and took the Tigers to the MIAA Tournament Championship game last season. She was 5-6 against UCM and 4-3 against SBU while at FHSU.
Susan Anderson is 166-117 in her sixth year at Central Missouri. She is 1-15 against ESU while at UCM and has a 3-26 record all-time against the Hornets.
Tammy Ikherd is 5-7 in her first year as head coach at Southwest Baptist. This is her first head coaching position and she alos serves as the compliance administrator for the Bearcats.

SCOUTING Central Missouri
The Jennies are 9-7 on the season but have lost seven of their last 11 games after opening the season 5-0. Jacki Prater bats .367 with ten RBI to lead the offense while Katie Shockley is 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in the circle.

SERIES AGAINST THE JENNIES
ESU leads the all-time series 50-38 and have won nine in a row against UCM.

LAST TIME AGAINST UCM
Karley Schmelzer struck out five as she only allowed two hits over seven innings to eliminate UCM from the MIAA Tournament. The Hornets scratched across one run on five hits to take the game by a score of 1-0. At the plate Andre Piezuch went two for three and drove in the game winner. Kaitlin Martin was one for two and scored the lone Hornet talley. Abby Hughes and Amanda Self also added hits for the Hornets.

SCOUTING SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
The Bearcats are 5-7 on the year and split their home opener against Central Methodist on Tuesday. Autumn Lamle is batting .400 with two homers and six RBI. Alex Abernathy is 2-0 with a 4.84 ERA

SERIES AGAINST THE BEARCATS
ESU leads the all-time series 36-8 and have won 16 in a row against the Jennies.

LAST TIME AGAINST SBU
Angela Mahan was three of four with two RBI and two runs as ESU run ruled SBU 8-0 at Trusler. Jennifer Heerey tossed a two hit shutout with six strikeouts for ESU.

UP NEXT
ESU plays their home opener on March 16 against Truman. First pitch from Turnbull Field at Trusler is set for 1 p.m.
