March 31, 2012-The #25 Emporia State softball team ran their MIAA conference winning streak to 17 games dating back to last season with a double header sweep of Ft. Hays State on Saturday in front of the largest home crowd of the season. ESU won game one 2-1 and came back with a 6-4 victory in game 2.
The Hornets had to come from behind for the fifth straight time in the matinee. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Callie Wright doubled in pinch runner Yasnaya Susoeff. Taylor Reichard led off the fifth with a solo home run to tie the game. Jessica Gragg followed her with a double and then scored the go ahead run on Jessica Brewer's slap single just past the pitcher.
Karley Schmelzer picked up her tenth win of the season as she scattered six hits with seven strike outs and a walk over 7.0 innings.
ESU jumped on top in the night cap by scoring three runs without a hit in the first inning. Andrea Piezuch was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first and went to third on a throwing error as Brewer reached trying to sacrifice. Brewer stole second and FHSU catcher Callie Wright tried to pick Piezuch off third and threw the ball into left field allowing Piezuch to score and Brewer to go to third. Stephanie Goodwin walked on a wild pitch that scored Brewer. Goodwin then stole second and went came around to score on another throwing error by Wright.
The Hornets went up 6-0 in the second with two more unearned runs. Taylor Zordel led off with a walkand with two outs stole second. After Goodwin walked, Vogel hit a ground ball to short and Kellsi Olsen tried to get the third out at third and threw the ball away allowing Zordel to score. Amanda Self then hit an RBI single that scored Vogel for a 6-0 lead with just one hit through two innings.
FHSU got on the board when Maddie Holub hit a two run double in the third to cut the lead to 6-2. Adriana Wortley walked to lead off the sixth and went to third on Amanda Vaupel's single. Holub scored on Chelsey Rottinghaus' single to center. Vaupel scored when, with runners on the corners, Self missed connections with Reichard on a cutoff as Rottinghaus stole second. The Hornets avoided further damage when Madison Putman lined into a double play to end the inning.
Lauren Sharp earned her seventh win of the year, scattering seven hits over 7.0 innings with three walks and a strikeout. Goodwin scored two runs with two walks for ESU.
The Hornets are back in action on Wednesday, April 4 when they travel to Wichita to take on Newman. First pitch of the double header at the Newman Softball Field is set for 5 p.m.
