Hornets extend winning streak to 27 over Lady Blues

March 30, 2012-The #25 Emporia State softball team extended their winning streak over Washburn to 27 games with a double header sweep of the Lady Blues on Friday at the Trusler Sports Complex.  The Hornets won the matinee 4-3 in 11 innings and took the second game 8-4.

WU broke a scoreless tie in the third on Shelby Erickson's two run double.  ESU cut the lead in half in the fifth when Taylor Zordel hit a lead off double and scored on Andrea Piezuch's RBI single. The Hornet then tied the game in the sixth when Amanda Self led off with a triple and scored on Kendra Gifford's sacrifice fly.

Neither team would score over the next three innings, putting the international tie breaker into play to start the tenth inning.  Lindsey Moore doubled in Erin Macaronas in the top of the tenth for WU and Taylor Reichard hit a sac fly in the bottom of the inning that scored Self and sent the game to the 11th inning.  After holding the Lady Blues scoreless in the top of the inning, Zordel drove in Jessica Gragg to lead off the bottom of the inning and give the Hornets a 4-3 win.

Tircia Vogel and Zordel both went two for five in the first game with Zordel scoring a run and getting an RBI.  Karley Schmelzer went all 11.0 innings giving up just two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts for her ninth win of the year.

In the night cap, ESU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Self singled in Stephanie Goodwin.  WU took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth on Moore's three run home run and a solo homer by Erickson.  Goodwin led off the bottom of the fifth reaching on an error and then got three straight singles from Vogel, Self, and Gifford with Self and Gifford both getting RBI to tie the game.  Gragg then gave ESU the lead with a two run homer to left.  The Hornets added two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Reichard and RBI single from Gragg.

Lauren Sharp, who came on in relief of Jen Heerey in the fifth, got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh when Reichard made a diving catch for the third out.

Self was three for four with two runs and two RBI and also picked off a runner in game two. Gragg was three for four with three RBI and run while Zordel went three for four as well. 

ESU is back in action on Saturday when they play host to Ft. Hays State.  First pitch of the Applebee's Autograph and Fan Appreciation Day is set for 1 p.m.
