March 25, 2012-Reigning MIAA Softball Hitter of the Week went four for six and drove in five of Emporia State’s ten runs in the Hornets double header sweep of #9 Missouri Western on Sunday at the Trusler Sports Complex. ESU won game one 5-2 and took the nightcap 5-4 to take over sole possession of first place in the MIAA with a 10-0 record.
The Griffons got on board first with a Kerri Lorbert RBI single in the top of the third inning. The Hornets responded with a three run homer from Vogel in the bottom of the inning to drive in Taylor Zordel and Jessica Brewer. Katherine Steponovich cut the ESU lead to 3-2 with an RBI double in the fourth inning for MWSU. Stephanie Goodwin gave the Hornets a pair of insurance runs in the fifth with a home run to left field.
Karley Schmelzer scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings, struck out seven and had one walk to pick up her eighth win of the season. Vogel was two for three with three RBI and a run scored, while Brewer went two for three with two runs scored.
MWSU got ahead early again in the nightcap with Lorbert getting an RBI single when she beat out a bunt single with runners on second and third. The Griffons made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the third. Breanna Fleschner reached on a throwing error and went to second on a wild pitch. She then scored on Blair Stalder’s single up the middle.
Taylor Reichard started the Hornet come back with a lead off homer in the fifth. Jessica Gragg followed with a single up the middle only to be erased when Zordel reached on a fielder’s choice. Andrea Piezuch beat out a bunt single and Brewer walked to load the bases. Stephanie Goodwin hit a ground ball to third and when the Griffons tried to get the lead run at the plate Lorbert dropped the throw allowing Zordel to score the tying run. Vogel broke the tie with a two RBI single and Self made it 5-2 with a sac fly.
Sarah Elliott led off the top of the seventh with a double and went to third on a ground out. Fleschner singled in Elliott to cut the Hornet lead to 5-3. Stadler singled through the left side to bring Schmelzer on in relief of starter Lauren Sharp. After Lorbert walked to load the bases, Maegan Roemmich hit a high fly ball that hit off the wall in left. The single scored Fleshner but pinch runner Erin Widrig was caught off second base for the second out of the inning. Taylor Anding lined out to second to end the game and give the Hornets a two game lead on the Griffons in the MIAA standings.
Vogel was two for three with two RBI while Gragg went three for three to lead the ESU offense. Sharp allowed four runs, three of them earned on seven hits in 6.1 innings to earn her fifth win. Schmelzer pitched the final .2 innings to pick up her second save of the year.
ESU is back in action on Friday, March 30 against Washburn. First pitch of the double header is set for 2 p.m. on Turnbull Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
