March 17, 2012-Emporia State pounded out 20 hits in a St. Patrick's Day sweep of Northwest Missouri on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia. The Hornets won game one 7-2 and picked up an 8-0 run rule win in the night cap.
The Bearcats struck first in the matinee, getting a RBI single from Hailee Hendricks that plated Jordan Ereth in the top of the first inning. ESU answered in the bottom of the inning when Jessica Brewer scored on an RBI single from Tricia Vogel.
The Hornets took the lead in the bottom of the third when Kendra Gifford worked a bases loaded walk with two outs. NWMSU evened the score in the top of the fifth after a leadoff triple by Ereth followed by an RBI single from Kristen Uthe. ESU matched NW in the bottom of the inning when Stephanie Goodwin tripled and scored on Vogel's single to give the Hornets the lead for good.
ESU would then four runs in the sixth inning to seal the win. Taylor Reichard led off with a single and Jessica Gragg doubled in pinch runner Alyssa Miller to force a pitching change for NWMSU. Taylor Zordel got an RBI ground out to score Gragg. Andrea Piezuch walked and scored on Goodwin's triple before Vogel got her third RBI of the game with a single through the left side.
Vogel was three for four with three RBI while Goodwin went two for two with two runs scored and an RBI. Karley Schmelzer picked up her seventh win of the year, scattering eight hits with three walks while striking out ten.
The Hornets escaped damage in the top of the first in the second game after Lauren Sharp walked the lead off hitter Josie VanHouten. Ereth failed to get the sac bunt down and popped out to Sharp. ESU then turned a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Pieauch led off the bottom of the first with a single to right and Brewer singled to center before Goodwin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vogel cleaned the bases with a grand slam to left field and a 4-0 Hornet lead. Self then singled to left and after a line out by Gifford, Reichard homered to give ESU a 6-0 lead.
ESU would not score again until the sixth. Reichard drove in Self with one out and then scored on Gragg's single to envoke the run rule.
Vogel was two for four with four RBI and a run scored on the grand slam in game two. Reichard went two for two with three RBI and a run scored as well. Lauren Sharp moved to 3-2 on the year with her first shut out of the year. She only allowed three hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
ESU is back in action on Wednesday, March 21 when they travel to Oklahoma City, Okla. to take on #19 West Texas A&M in a neutral site double header. First pitch from Ann Lacy Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
NOTES:
Vogel was five for seven with seven RBI in the double header.
The Hornets have now win 61 of their last 67 games at the Trusler Sports Complex and have won six in a row dating to last season.
