March 16,2012-Emporia State pitchers combined to pitch 11 shutout innings as the Hornet softball team defeated Truman 10-0 and 8-0 at the Trusler Sports Complex on Friday.
Karley Schmelzer tossed a two-hitter with eight strike outs in 5.0 innings in the first game. She got all the offensive support she would need in the first when Tricia Vogel singled in Stephanie Goodwin. Jessica Gragg and Taylor Zordel hit back to back homers to make it 3-0 after two innings. The Hornets exploded for six runs in the third inning and added another in the fourth for the run rule victory.
Zordel was two for three with two RBI, two runs scored and a home run to lead the offensive attack as eight Hornets got a hit in game one.
In the nightcap ESU jumped out 3-0 after the first thanks in part to a two run homer from Tricia Vogel. A three run homer from Goodwin made it 6-0 Hornets after four innings. ESU added a run in the fifth and Amanda Self ended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to envoke the run rule.
Jen Heerey scattered five hits over 6.0 innings with seven strike outs to get her second shut out of the year. Goodwin was three of four with two runs, three RBI and a home run to lead the Hornet attack. Everyone in the lineup rached base in game two.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday when they play host to Northwest Missouri. First pitch of the double header is set for 12 noon at the Trusler Sports Complex.
