March 10, 2012 -- The Emporia State softball team moved to 4-0 in MIAA with a sweep on the road at Southwest Baptist. The Hornets run-ruled the Bearcats in game one 11-0 before knocking them off 7-3 in game two.
In the double header opener the Hornets scored 11 runs on 13 hits while Karley Schmelzer threw a no-hitter in an 11-0 run-rule win. The Hornets used five extra base hits and scored seven runs in the fourth and fifth to close out the win.
Andrea Piezuch was three for four with her first home run of the season scoring three runs and driving in two. Stephanie Goodwin hit her second home run of the season and added three RBI. Kendra Gifford was two for two with two runs batted in.
In the circle Karley Schmelzer struck out nine and only allowed one base runner to move to 5-2 on the year.
In game two ESU jumped out to a 3-1 lead scoring single runs in the first, second and third. ESU would then grab four runs in the fifth inning to put the game away for good on the way to a 7-3 victory.
Jessica Gragg hit her first home run of the season as she was two for two with two runs scored. Taylor Zordel went two for three with three runs drive in while Tricia Vogel also added two RBI.
In the circle Lauren Sharp went seven innings allowing only one earned run while striking out four to pick up her second victory.
The Hornet softball team will be at home for the first time this season on March 16 when they face Truman. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Turnbull Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
