February 26, 2012-The Emporia State softball team ended their stay at the Best Western Premier Spring Fling with a run rule win over Quincy in Denton, Texas. Earlier in the day ESU dropped a 6-0 decision to TAMU-International.
In the first game of the day, ESU had a season high four errors as TAMUI scored four unearned runs. The Hornets stranded five base runners in the game. Amanda Self went two for three and reached base safely three times to lead the ESU offense. Jennifer Heerey went the distance in the circle, scattering seven hits while striking out seven with four walks. It was the first time the Hornets had been shutout this year.
The Hornets got on the board early in an 11-1 victory over QU in the final game. ESU scored one in the first and then plated four in the second to take at 5-0 lead. Jessica Gragg and Taylor Zordel each had two RBI singles in the second. The Hornets added another run in the third and put the game away with five more in the fourth. Taylor Reichard delivered the knockout blow with a two RBI double. Gragg went one for three but had four RBI for ESU while REichard and Zordel each went two for two with two RBI. Karley Schmelzer earned the win, giving up one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
The Hornets are not scheduled to play again for nearly two weeks. They will open MIAA play on March 9 at Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.

The win was #100 in coach Julie LeMaire's head coaching career and came against her alma mater. She is a 2004 graduate of Quincy.
