February 24, 2012-The Emporia State softball team went 1-1 on their first day at the Best Western Premier Spring Fling hosted by Texas Woman's University. ESU lost to #8 Angelo State 6-3 in the first game and defeated the host Pioneers 3-2 in the second game.
In the matinee, the Hornets got on the board first when Stephanie Goodwin scored on an error by the Rambelles shortstop with two outs in the first inning. ASU would tie the score with a two out solo homer by Morgan Spearman in the third inning. The Rambelles took the lead with two outs in the fourth on a double by Luz'Ce Baca and RBI single from April Breshears.
The big blow of the game came in the sixth after Karley Schmelzer again got the first two batters out before giving up a double and two walks to load the bases. Lauren Smith then hit a grand slam to make it 6-1 going to the bottom of the sixth.
ESU got single runs in the bottom of the sixth on Kendra Gifford's RBI double and in the bottom of the seventh on a ground out by Goodwin that scored Katie Huffman.
Karley Schmelzer took the loss for the Hornets giving up six runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. ASU scored all six of their runs after two were out.
In the nightcap, ESU fell behind 1-0 on Jordan Readicker's solo homer in the second inning. Taylor Zordel tied it for the Hornets with a solo home run of her own in the third and Jennifer Heerey gave ESU the lead with a two run homer later in the inning. TWU closed to within 3-2 on a bases loaded walk in the fifth before Heerey settled down and retired eight of the final ten batters she faced to pick up her fourth win.
Heerey had ten strikeouts as she scattered seven hits and gave up two walks in the complete game win.
ESU will play St. Mary's at 9 a.m. on Saturday in their only game of the day at the Best Western Premier Spring Fling. Hornet coach Julie LeMaire will be going for her 100th career win as a collegiate coach in the contest.
