HORNET SOFTBALL DEFEATS ST. MARY'S 4-3 IN EIGHT INNINGS

February 10, 2012 -- Kendra Gifford hit an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning as the Emporia State softball team needed extra innings to defeat St. Mary's 4-3 in San Antonio, Texas. The Hornets were outhit six to four on the day but took advantage of one error to score an unearned run to win the game.

ESU struck first in the third inning as Gifford and Tricia Vogel both had RBI hits to put ESU on top 3-0. St. Mary's would answer with a singe tally in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth to force the extra innings.

Gifford went two for three on the day and was the only Hornet with multiple hits as she added two RBI and scored a run. Vogel went one for three with two RBI on a run scoring double. Jessica Brewer was one for three on the day and scored two runs, one of which proved to be the game winner. Andrea Piezuch scored the other Hornet talley after drawing a walk in the third inning.

Karley Schmelzer went eight innings allowing six hits while striking out six and walking five. She stranded Rattler runners in both the seventh and eight inning to seal the victory.

The two teams are scheduled to face off again tomorrow morning from San Antonio, Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. from the campus of Incarnate Word. The Hornets are also scheduled to face the host Cardinals following their game with St. Mary's with a scheduled 12:30 p.m. first pitch.
