Tie single game saves record

October 9, 2011 -- The Emporia State soccer team tied the single game record for saves by an ESU team with 18 on the day tieing the mark set in 2001 in a 1-0 loss to #12 Central Missouri. ESU stopped 18 of 19 shots from the UCM offense which has only been held to one goal or less twice this season.

The Hornets held Central Missour off the board in the first half despite 16 shots. Central Missouri would earn their tally in the 85th minute as Alyssa Rhodes hit a shot from just outside the box to put the Jennies ahead for good. ESU got three of their four shots on goal in the second half as Jessica Decker came within inches of scoring off a corner kick early in the period.

Nikki Schmitz stopped 16 shots on the afternoon tieing a record set by Megan Martin (twice) during the 2007 season. The team record of 18 total saves as a squad (ESU earned two team saves) was met for the first time since ESU did it against Truman on Sept. 23, 2001.

The Hornets will face Southwest Baptist on Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. from Bolivar, Mo.
