Emporia State Athletics Celebrates Student-Athletes at Corky Awards

May 11, 2026-Emporia State Athletics held their annual awards show The Corkys - A Student-Athlete Celebration on Monday night in Webb Hall inside the ESU Memorial Union.

In addition to the senior recognitions, the Hornets announced the Outstanding Student-Athletes of the Year, the Kent Weiser Hornet Legacy Award, the Undergraduate Award of Excellence, Th eJoh "Doc" Baxter Legacy Award, the Joe Cannon Award and a host of team voted on awards.  Emporia State also recognized outgoing Faculty Athletics Representative Terri Summey with a framed jersey.  
Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year
The Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to a deserving male and female student-athlete - based upon their performance over time, athletic achievement, academic success, and contributions to the team. 
Land Boss, Football
Boss is a consensus All-American on the field and has a 3.72 GPA in business as a junior linebacker for the Hornets. He earned First-Team All-American honors from the AFCA, D2CCA, AP, Don Hansen Football Committee, and Walter Camp Football Foundation and was named Second-Team All-American by D2Football.com. Boss was a unanimous selection as a First-Team All-MIAA linebacker, while also winning the Defensive Player of the Year award in the Association. The Osage City, Kan. native tallied 101 tackles on the season, which included ten sacks, 11 quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and a defensive touchdown.  He led the MIAA in sacks and tackles for loss while ranking second in the league in solo tackles and fourth in total tackles.  His 69 solo tackles are the fifth most in the nation, his 17.5 tackles for loss rank sixth in the nation while his ten sacks are 12th in the nation.
  Boss finished the season with ten sacks to rank fourth all-time on the Emporia State single season list. His 18 tackles for loss on the season move him into a tie with Greg Harvey (1993), Leon Brigham (1997) and Gerard Clemons (1998) for fourth on the Emporia State single season TFL list. He tied Patrick Cook (1995) and Gerard Clemons (1997) for the school record with four sacks in a game.
Brooke Flewelling, Softball
Flewelling led the MIAA and is ranked tenth in the nation in home runs per game as she led the Hornets to the semifinals of the MIAA Softball Tournament. The junior earned Second-Team All-MIAA status at third base after being named honorable mention last season. She hit .346 with 16 home runs, eight doubles, four triples and 43 RBI. She ranks fourth in the MIAA in slugging percentage, fifth in total bases, sixth in triples, and tenth in RBI. She is also 15th in the league in assists from the hot corner.
Her 16 home runs this season rank third and her .748 slugging percentage is tied for fifth on the Emporia State single season list while her 31 career homers are fourth all-time for the Hornets.
The Holton, Kan. native is a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
 
Undergrad Award of Excellence
The Undergraduate Award of Excellence is given to an outstanding male and female underclass student-athlete who excels in their sport. 
Colby Deaver, Baseball
Deaver was the MIAA Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous First-Team All-MIAA selection as a sophomore for the Hornets. He posted an 11-2 record in 15 starts, while striking out 102 batters and allowing just 12 walks across 96.0 innings. He recorded a 1.50 ERA and opened the season without allowing an earned run through his first 34.1 innings pitches. He had eight starts with eight or more strikeouts, including a career-high 16 in the MIAA Quarterfinals against Missouri Southern, which is also tied for the most in a single-game in NCAA Division II this season.
The Blue Springs, Mo. native ranks in the top five in the nation in six categories, including first in WHIP (0.82), second in wins (11), ERA (1.50) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.50), third in strikeouts (102), and fourth in walks per nine innings (1.13).
Stella Agbokpah, Track & Field
Agbokpah set school records in the 100m and 200m in her freshman campaign for Emporia State.  The freshman is ranked fourth in the nation in the 200m and ninth in the nation in the 100m. She was the MIAA Runner-Up in the 100 and 200m and was a part of the third place 4x400m relay and fifth place 4x100m relay teams that both hit provisional qualifying marks.
The Accra-Adenta, Ghana native should be running for a national championship May 21-23 at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Welch Stadium after earning second-team All-American status indoors with a ninth place finish in the 200m.
 
Kent Weiser Hornet Legacy Award
The Kent Weiser Hornet Legacy Award recognizes an Emporia State senior that has exemplified what it means to be a Hornet throughout his or her career.  It is based not only on athletic ability, but leadership talents both on and off the field of play. It signifies making a lasting, positive impression on their teams, the athletic department, and the university. 
Gracie Gilpin, Women's Basketball
Gilpin has a 3.74 GPA as a senior in computer science and was named Third-Team All-MIAA.  She started 29 of 30 games and was named Third-Team All-MIAA. The Emporia native averaged 13.1 points per game and was second in the MIAA with 69 made three pointers. She is ranked 28th on the Lady Hornets career scoring list with 1,053 points. Her 226 career made three-pointers rank third all-time and are the most by a Lady Hornet that only played three seasons.
 
John "Doc" Baxter Legacy Award
The John Baxter Award is given to an athletic training student who exemplifies John "Doc" Baxter's legacy. This student has proven time and time again, their dedication to you, ESU student-athletes, and to the profession as a whole. It is for a senior student that has positively impacted this program both in the classroom and in the athletic training room.  This year's recipient is Lily McClellan
 
Joe Cannon Award
The Joe Cannon Award is given to someone outside the Athletic Department that has ben an exceptional fan, supporter and contributor to the success of Hornet Athletics. This year's recipients are Jim and Kathy Kessler.
