Billeter Announces 2025-26 Emporia State Men's Basketball Recruiting Class

Hornets to add five transfers and two high school players to class

May 12, 2025-Coach Tom Billeter has announced the spring recruiting class for Emporia State University. Transfers Mason Jones, Andrew Pengel, Trey Redd, Olafur Styrmisson and Mason Wujek along with prepsters Trey Taylor and Jack Weigus will be attending Emporia State next year and playing basketball for the Hornets. They join previous signee Elijah Wilhem in the recruiting class for 2025-26
 
"These seven players along with Elijah Wilhelm bring a great deal of size, speed and maturity to our program," said Billeter. "My staff, Casey Schlatter and Devin Whitelow, did an outstanding job of recruiting not only this groups talent but their overall ability to play together and be a team."
 
Mason Jones 6'5" 200lb G – Fort Worth, Texas (East Central (Okla.)/Keller Central HS)
Mason Jones is a 6-5 guard from Fort Worth, Texas. He transfers to Emporia State from East Central (Okla.) and will have one year remaining. He averaged 5.6 points per game while shooting .493 from the field and .419 from the three-point line last year.  He played in 33 total games with the Tigers over his three years with 13 starts, all coming last season. He scored a career high 19 points against NCAA Tournament team Minot State. He averaged 18 points and six rebounds per game as a senior at Keller Central HS and was named First-Team All-District and All-Region.
Billeter on Jones:  Mason is a very strong wing who has a selfless attitude who can also defend.  He brings a maturity and balance to our team and will be an outstanding teammate.
 
Andrew Pengel 6'2" 180lbs G – Rohnert Park, Calif. (Santa Rosa JC/Rancho Cotate HS)
Andrew Pengel is a 6-2 guard from Rohnert Park, Calif. and will have two years of eligibility after transferring from Santa Rosa JC in California. He averaged 22.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the Bear Cubs. He connected on 101 of 253 three-point attempts in 29 games. He averaged 5.1 rebounds and had 57 assists and 30 steals on the season. He had a career high 36 points twice – against Umpqua and Pasadena City – while reaching 30 points in a total of six games. As a freshman he made 54 three-pointers on .342 shooting from beyond the arc.  He had a 51-point game as a senior for Rancho Cotate HS
Billeter on Pengel:  Andrew is an excellent offensive threat who averaged 22.5 points a game last season at Santa Rosa Junior College.  He played for an outstanding coach, Craig McMillan, who taught him how to find the basket in a magnitude of ways.  Andrew is also a solid rebounder and will bring a great deal of energy to our team.
 
Trey Redd 5'10" 150lb G – Bloomington, IL (Maryville/Bloomington Normal HS): 
Trey Redd is a 5-10 guard from Bloomington, Ill. He comes to Emporia State with one year remaining from Maryville where he started 27 of 28 games as a junior. He averaged 6.8 points and 4.4 assists per game with a 3.1 assist to turnover ratio. He led the GLVC and was ninth in the nation in assist to turnover ratio. He scored a career high 22 points against NCAA Tourney team Upper Iowa and dished nine assists against Rockhurst. He led Bloomington Normal HS to a 34-1 record as a senior.
 Billeter on Redd:  Trey is an outstanding playmaker and dynamic passer.  He is extremely unselfish as he had 122 assists to 40 turnovers last season at Maryville.  He will be a solid defender, and we are looking forward to having him here next season.
 
Olafur Styrmisson 6'7" 210lbs F – Reykjavik, Iceland (Regis/Menntaskolinn við Sund HS)
Olafur Styrmisson is a 6-7 forward from Reykjavik, Iceland. He is a transfer from Regis and will have two years of eligibility remaining. He played in four games in November before suffering an injury that kept him out of the line up until late February. When he returned, he saw action in six more games, starting the final five to help get the Rangers into the NCAA Tournament.  He had a season high 20 points and seven rebounds in the RMAC Tournament Semifinals against Fort Lewis. He started all 22 games he played in as a freshman at Regis, averaging 4.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.  He was a varsity letter winner for Menntaskolinn við Sund HS in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Billeter on Styrmisson:  Oli is a very solid player with length and skill who has good feet and hands.  He is a very good defender who can also score in a variety of ways.  He is extremely highly thought of back home by the Icelandic Basketball Federation and will be a very good player for us.
 
Mason Wujek 6'8" 230 lb F – Frisco, Texas (Quincy/Firsco Memorial HS)
Mason Wujek is a 6-8 forward from Frisco, Texas that comes to Emporia State from Quincy University with one year of eligibility left.  He averaged 5.5 points on .560 shooting from the field and made 12 of 25 three-pointers for the Hawks last season.  In his three years he saw action in 75 games with 39 starts and was a career .538 shooter from the field. As a sophomore he averaged 7.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game with 20 starts in 28 games. He had a double-double with career highs of 18 points and 11 rebounds against Truman State. As a senior at Frisco Memorial HS he averaged a double-double of 13 points and ten rebounds per game on the way to All-District honors.
Billeter on Wujek: Mason is a strong 6-8 post player who has excellent hands and a soft touch.  He is a veteran player who can set screens, roll and finish.  Again, a selfless player who wants to win, he has all of the tools to be an excellent 5 in our system.
 
Trey Taylor 6'6" 215lbs F – Moline, Ill. (Moline HS)
Trey Taylor is a 6-6 forward from Moline, Ill. He was a second-team Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) All-State selection in Class 4A. He is the winningest player in Moline HS history ad the Maroons were 115-25 in his four years with three regional championships, a sectional championship and an Illinois State Championship.
Billeter on Taylor: Trey is a very talented young man who has been well coached and really knows how to play. He is a strong player who has the ability to be comfortable both on the perimeter and in the paint. He will be a great addition to our program.
 
Jack Weigus 6'3" 190lb G – Chicago, Ill. (Brother Rice HS)
Jack Weigus is a from Chicago, Ill. He was a Chicago Catholic League All-Conference performer for Brother Rice HS and scored over 1500 career points at Brother Rice and Hinsdale South HS. He helped Brother Ric advance to the Illinois State Championship game for the first time in school history. He averaged 20 points per game and shot 39% from the three-point line as a junior at Hinsdale South HS.
Billeter on Weigus:  Jack is an outstanding shooter/scorer who also wants to be the best defender on the floor.  He played a major role in advancing Chicago's Brother Rice to the Illinois State Championship, the furthest the school has ever gone.  Jack is an excellent player and a winner.
