Madison Vermetten had the fifth best mark in Emporia State history in the women's hammer and
Max Neeley had another provisional qualifier to highlight the first day at the KU Relays for Emporia State track and field.

Vermetten threw 52.48m (172-2) to place eighth at Rock Chalk Park. She was the second best NCAA Division II performer in the field. She passed Deja Jackson who threw 51.63m (169-5) at the 2011 KT Woodman Classic for fifth on the Emporia State all-time list.

Neeley cleared the same bar as the winner but finished in a tie for second based on misses in the men's pole vault. A week after clearing 5.00m at the KT Woodman, Neeley followed up with a 4.97m (16-3.50) at Rock Chalk Park. It is the third time in four meets this spring he has gone over 16 feet in the vault.

On the track
Cooper Schroer finished fifth with a time of 1:56.75 in the men's 800m while
Dylan Hunter ran 15:10.83 to place fifth in the men's 5000m.

The lights at Rock Chalk Park during the running of the men's 3000m steeplechase and the athletes ran the final approximately 2000m in the darkness.Â
Gage Chapman finished ninth in 10:52.23 among the 13 runners that finished the race.

The Hornets will continue competition in the 102
nd anniversary running of the Kansas Relays on Friday starting at 9:15 a.m. with the prelims in the men's 110m hurdles.
