LAST LAP
Emporia State came away with four more provisional qualifying marks and an event championship last Saturday at the WU Open.
Connor Deters highlighted the day for Emporia State as he won the men's shot put with a provisional qualifying mark of 16.92m (55-6.25) that ranks in the top five all-time for the Hornets. He unleashed the personal best on his first throw of the competition while five of his six attempts passed the provisional mark. Â He moved past Jim Riedesel into fifth in Emporia State history in the event.Â
Luke Grace finished third in the men's heptathlon with 4,979 points while
Isabella Davie place third in the women's pentathlon with 3,330 points. Â
Max Neeley cleared the highest bar in the men's invitational pole vault but placed second due to misses. Â His provisional qualifier of 4.87m (15-11.75) was just one centimeter from his career best.
Ty Anderson hit the provisional mark in both the semifinals and finals of the men's 60m. Â He was clocked in 6.81 in the semifinals and came back with a 6.77 to place sixth. Â
THE COACH
Seth Mischke is in his second year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field programs. The Hornets have produced four MIAA individual champions and an All-American under his leadership. Before coming to Emporia State he spent one year at Chadron State. Eagle throwers earned five All-America awards and four RMAC Championships. Prior to Chadron State, Mischke spent 11 seasons as the head track and field coach and assistant cross country coach at Black Hills State University. The Yellow Jackets produced two individual national champions, 18 All-America earners, 18 conference champions, and more than 100 All-RMAC honorees under his guidance. Mischke was the head track and field/cross country coach at St. Cloud State for 12 years. During his tenure at SCSU, the Huskies had 44 All-Americans and one national champion.
 A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
Emporia State has recorded 12 provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships.
Jonah Remsberg is seventh in the nation in the men's heptathlon with an adjusted and provisional qualifying total of  5,238 points at the UCCS Pre-Holiday Multi. He is third in the MIAA. His 5213 actual points rank second all-time at Emporia State.  He is also ranked 31st in the nation and third in the MIAA in the long jump with a provisional mark of 7.23m (23-8.75) during his heptathlon in Colorado Springs.
Ty Anderson is 15th in the nation and ranked sixth in the MIAA in the men's 60m dash. He ran a provisional qualifier of 6.73 at the WU Alumni Invite. It is the second best mark in Emporia State history. He is also ranked seventh in the MIAA and 17th in the nation with a time of 21.42 in the 200m at the Washburn Open. His 200 time is the third best at Emporia State.

Luke Grace scored a provisional qualifying 4,979 points at the Washburn Open heptathlon to rank fifth in the MIAA and 20th in the nation.
Max Neeley went 4.88m (16-0.00) at the Rumble in the Jungle to rank 24th in the nation and seventh in the MIAA in the men's pole vault. He is the fourth Hornet to clear 16-0 in the event.
Emmanuel Dukpe is seventh in the MIAA and 32nd in the nation in the men's 400m after running 48.10 at the Rumble in the Jungle. It is the fourth best time in ESU history in the 400.Â
Israel Domeh ran 21.57 in the men's 200m at the Rust Buster to rank 33rd in the nation and tenth in the MIAA. It is the third best mark in Hornet history.
Mele Taula has a pair of provisional qualifiers. She is ranked sixth in the nation and third in the MIAA after going 15.15m (49-8.5) in the women's shot put at the WU Alumni Invite. Â It is the third best mark in Emporia State history. At the Rust Buster she threw 17.20m (56-5.25) to rank 33rd nationally and eighth in the MIAA in the weight throw.
Isabella Davie scored a provisional qualifying total of 3,320 points in the pentahlon at the Washburn Open. She is ranked fourth in the MIAA and 26th in the nation.

HORNETS IN THE ALL-TIME TOP FIVE
Eight current Hornets have a combined ten top five marks in nine events all-time at Emporia State.

RETURNING NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
Emporia State returns six athletes that provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships last year.
Mele Taula finished tenth in the nation in the indoor shot put last year for Emporia State. Â She was also ranked 34th in the indoor weight throw.
Ty Anderson was ranked 23rd in the nation in the 60m dash and 70th in the indoor long jump. Â
Kingsley Bennett joined Anderson as a provisional qualifier in the 60m, ranking 37th in the nation.
Trenden Collins was ranked 35th in the nation in the indoor high jump last season.
Coby Smith rounds out the returning qualifiers, ranking 47th in the nation last year in the indoor heptathlon.
MIAA PRESEASON POLL
The MIAA released the preseason coaches polls in men's and women's indoor track and field earlier this year. The Hornet men were ranked eighth and the women 11th in the preseason polls.Â
TRACK TOWN USA - DIVISION II STYLE
After playing host to the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Emporia State will be the site of the 2025 MIAA Outdoor Championships. It will be the seventh time Welch Stadium has served as host of conference championships since 1997.
Emporia State's Welch Stadium and Zola Witten Track will host the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Â It will be the fifth time that Welch Stadium has played host to the national championships.
Welch Stadium previously served as the host site for the National Championships in 1995, 1999, 2006, and 2024 with the first meet in 1995 bringing 450 student-athletes to Emporia. The 2026 meet is scheduled to bring 754 student-athletes, nearly 200 coaches and over 100 officials to the Flint Hills over the Memorial Day weekend.
The 2026 Championships are scheduled for May 21-23.
During championship week, the NCAA Committee will come to Emporia on Monday with the first practice time available on Tuesday. Â Wednesday of championship week will see a variety of coaches and officials meetings before the actual competition begin on Thursday. Â The meet will wrap up on Saturday evening.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will split their squad next weekend. A select group will travel to Mankato, Minn. to take part in the Maverick Premier series on February 14 and 15 with another grpup returning ot Tooeka to compete at the Ichabod Invitational.
