BACK AT IT
The Emporia State D-I men's disc golf team travels to Morton, Ill. this weekend for the Midwest Collegiate Takeover II presented by Ledgestone. The Hornets will be joined by Arkansas, Asbury, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Milligan, Missouri State, Purdue, Tennessee Tech, Illinois-Urbana,Champaign, Cincinnati, Kansas, Missouri, St. Thomas, Wisconsin and Wis.-Green Bay. Emporia State, Milligan and Arkansas all finished in the top 15 at last spring's Disc Golf National Championships.

Grant Yoder and
Joshua Sterner placed third at the Powercat Invitational Conference Event in Manhattan, Kan. on October 5.
THE COACH
Eric McCabe is the first coach in the history of the Emporia State competitive disc golf team. An Emporia native and the 2010 PDGA World Champion, McCabe led the Hornet men to a national runner-up finish in their first year while the women placed 16th nationally. He has led every team during his three years to at least a Top 16 finish in the nation with a national runner-up in both the men's and women's team standings and an Individual national champion.
From 2001-16 McCabe won 84 PDGA sanctioned events with 173 top three finishes. He has five top-25 finishes in PDGA World Championship competition, 13 top-25 finishes in other majors, and placed in the top-25 of 54 National Tour events during his career.
THE PLAYERS
The Hornets will be represented in Illinois by
Carter Ahrens,
TJ Reel,
Isaiah Esquivel and Mica Tatro. Ahrens won the individual championship at The Collegiate Presented by Innova Discs on September 6 in his first competition with the Hornets. Including his junior division wins Ahrens has 32 wins in 136 career events. Reel and Esquivel tied for fifth at the event in Broken Arrow, Okla. Reel has ten career wins in 55 career events. Esquivel has competed in 240 sanctioned disc golf events with 39 career wins. Trato has competed in 83 career events with seven wins.
LAST YEAR
The Emporia State DI men's team of
Justin Farrell,
Cade Kohlmeier,
TJ Reel and
Micah Tatro finished in a tie for 11th overall at last year's College Disc Golf National Championships. They birdied #18 to go six under on the day at Canaan Riverbend and finished -18 in the championships. Cincinnati shot -33 over the tourney to win their second national championship in three years. Defending national champion UNC-Charlotte shot -29 to finish second at the Championships.
Isaiah Esquivel,
Joshua Sterner,
Caden Stucky and
Grant Yoder went -18 in the DII competition for the Hornets to finish tied for 14th in the nation. They shot -3 on Saturday at Westminster Park.
Earlier in the week
Cade Kohlmeier finished third in the men's individual singles competition.
THE FORMAT
Early check-in will take place on Friday, October 24. The team Round will begin with a shotgun start on Saturday, October 25 at 9:00 a.m. on the Northwood Blue course. The singles rounds are slated to follow at around 1:00 p.m. on Northwood Blue. The final team round tee times will be determined by Saturday's results with the first team going off at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Northwood Black course.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will play host to the Mid-American Regional Championships on November 15-16 at Peter Pan Park and Jones Park. This will be a chance for the men's D1 and D2 teams as well as the women's teams to qualify for the national championships.
