RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE Â
Emporia State travels to Pittsburg, Kan. for the Rumble in the Jungle.
LAST LAP
The Hornets recorded six provisional qualifiers, three Emporia State all-time top five marks and two event championships at the Washburn Rust Buster Invitational.
Ty Anderson started things with a runner-up finish of 6.79 in the 60m dash. Â He came back to join
Israel Domeh with a pair of qualifiers in the 200m.  Domeh ran the third best 200m in Emporia State history at 21.57 to place third  with Anderson two spots behind him in a time of 21.61 that ranks fourth all-time for the Hornets. Â
Max Neeley cleared a provisional qualifying bar of 4.87m (15-11.75) to place fourth in the men's pole vault. Â It is the fourth best mark in Emporia State history.
Connor Deters threw a personal best of 16.73m (54-10.75) to capture the men's shot put title.
Mele Taula had the lone provisional qualifier for the Emporia State women. Â Her mark of 17.20m (56-5.25) was good enough for a runner up finish in the women's weight throw.
Isabella Davie cleared 1.55m (5-1.00) to win the women's open high jump.
THE COACH
Seth Mischke is in his second year as the head coach for the Emporia State track and field programs. The Hornets have produced four MIAA individual champions and an All-American under his leadership. Before coming to Emporia State he spent one year at Chadron State. Eagle throwers earned five All-America awards and four RMAC Championships. Prior to Chadron State, Mischke spent 11 seasons as the head track and field coach and assistant cross country coach at Black Hills State University. The Yellow Jackets produced two individual national champions, 18 All-America earners, 18 conference champions, and more than 100 All-RMAC honorees under his guidance. Mischke was the head track and field/cross country coach at St. Cloud State for 12 years. During his tenure at SCSU, the Huskies had 44 All-Americans and one national champion.Â
A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
Emporia State has recorded nine provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships.
Ty Anderson is tied for fifth in the nation and the top mark in the men's 60m dash. He ran a provisional qualifier of 6.73 at the WU Alumni Invite. It is the second best mark in Emporia State history. He is also ranked 25th in the nation and seventh in the MIAA with a time of 21.61 in the 200m at the Rust Buster Invitational.
Jonah Remsberg is fifth in the nation in the men's heptathlon with an adjusted and provisional qualifying total of  5,238 points at the UCCS Pre-Holiday Multi. He is second in the MIAA. His 5213 actual points rank second all-time at Emporia State.  He is also ranked 24th in the nation in the long jump with a provisional mark of 7.23m (23-8.75) during his heptathlon in Colorado Springs.  He is second in the MIAA in the long jump this season.
Connor Deters is second in the MIAA with a provisional qualifier of 16.73m (54-10.75) in the men's shot put at the Rust Buster Invite to rank 17th in the nation.
Israel Domeh ran 21.57 in the men's 200m at the Rust Buster to rank 18th in the nation and fifth in the MIAA.Â
Max Neeley cleared 4.87m (15-11.75) at the Rust Buster to rank 19th in the nation and sixth in the MIAA in the men's pole vault.
Mele Taula has a pair of provisional qualifiers. She is ranked sixth in the nation and leads the MIAA after going 15.15m (49-8.5) in the women's shot put at the WU Alumni Invite. Â It is the third best mark in Emporia State history. At the Rust Buster she threw 17.20m (56-5.25) to rank 25th nationally and seventh in the MIAA in the weight throw.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will go back to Topeka on January 31 and February 1 for the two day Washburn Open. Â Action at the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility begins on Friday with the men's heptathlon at 11:00 a.m. with running and field events starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday's action will begin with the multis at 10:00 a.m. followed by running events at 12:20 p.m. and field events at 2:30 p.m.
RETURNING NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
Emporia State returns six athletes that provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships last year.
Mele Taula finished tenth in the nation in the indoor shot put last year for Emporia State. Â She was also ranked 34th in the indoor weight throw.
Ty Anderson was ranked 23rd in the nation in the 60m dash and 70th in the indoor long jump. Â
Kingsley Bennett joined Anderson as a provisional qualifier in the 60m, ranking 37th in the nation.
Trenden Collins was ranked 35th in the nation in the indoor high jump last season.
Coby Smith rounds out the returning qualifiers, ranking 47th in the nation last year in the indoor heptathlon.
MIAA PRESEASON POLL
The MIAA has released the preseason coaches polls in men's and women's indoor track and field. The Hornet men are ranked eighth and the women 11th in the preseason polls.Â
TRACK TOWN USA - DIVISION II STYLE
After playing host to the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Emporia State will be the site of the 2025 MIAA Outdoor Championships. It will be the seventh time Welch Stadium has served as host of conference championships since 1997.
Emporia State's Welch Stadium and Zola Witten Track will host the 2026 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Â It will be the fifth time that Welch Stadium has played host to the national championships.
Welch Stadium previously served as the host site for the National Championships in 1995, 1999, 2006, and 2024 with the first meet in 1995 bringing 450 student-athletes to Emporia. The 2026 meet is scheduled to bring 754 student-athletes, nearly 200 coaches and over 100 officials to the Flint Hills over the Memorial Day weekend.
The 2026 Championships are scheduled for May 21-23.
During championship week, the NCAA Committee will come to Emporia on Monday with the first practice time available on Tuesday. Â Wednesday of championship week will see a variety of coaches and officials meetings before the actual competition begin on Thursday. Â The meet will wrap up on Saturday evening.
