May 23, 2024-Emporia State had two personal bests and all three Hornets improved on their entry mark on the first day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Witten Track in Welch Stadium.

Ty Anderson ran a personal best time of 10.27 to finish 14th in the men's 100m. He improved by two spots over his entry position and improved by .02 on his previous best. It is the second best time in Emporia State history.

Jake Johnson ran 52.65 to place tenth in the men's 400m hurdles. He improved four spots over his entry position.

Abigael Reid finished up the day for Emporia State with a personal best of 1:00.09 to place 14th in the women's 400m hurdles. She improved her finish by five spots and .24 seconds over her entry position and time. It is the third best time in Emporia State history.

Trenden Collins will represent Emporia State on Friday at the championships. He is tied for 12
th on the entry list after clearing 2.14m (7-00.25) in the men's high jump.

Record setting day
There were seven facility and two meet records set on Thursday.

Isaac Botsio of West Texas A&M ran 9.99 for the best time in the prelims of the men's 100m to set Witten Track and NCAA Division II Championship meet records. His time of 9.985 edged out Kibren Moore of Albany State. His time surpassed the facility record of 10.04 set by Kawayne Fisher of Jamaica at the Sam Williams Qualifier in 2013.  Botsio and Moore became the first men to break ten seconds in the 100m and bettered Steve Reddick of Norfolk State's meet record of 10.00 set in 1972.

Joshua Page of Tiffin ran 45.24 to win the prelims of the men's 400m. He bettered the previous stadium record of 45.52 by St. Augustine's Marlin Cannon at the 1995 NCAA Championships.

Central Missouri's foursome of Ariel Kerr, Brockton McLaughlin, Rawley Chard, and Antonio Lay ran 39.67 for the fastest time in the men's 4x100m relay prelims. They bettered Abilene Christian's record of 39.79 set by Bobby Tatum, Marvin Bien-Aime, Brant Gilbert, and Jordan Johnson at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

Both the men's and women's facility record for the long jump were broken by jumpers from Azusa Pacific.Â

Jermel Jones II of Azusa Pacific went 8.18m (26-10.00) to win the men's long jump. He broke Wilbert Walker of Lincoln's Welch Stadium record of 8.13m (26-08.25) set at the 2006 NCAA Champions.

Nicole Warwick of Azusa Pacific jumped 6.81m (22-04.25) to win the women's long jump. She bettered Anna Forrester's record of 6.32m (20-09.00) set while competing unattached at the 2018 ESU Relays.

Roberts Wesleyan's Brynn King broke the facility and Division II Meet records in the women's pole vault. She cleared 4.60m (15-01.00) to break Emily Presley of Missouri Southern's facility record of 4.25m (13-11.25) set at the 2018 ESU Relays and the Division II meet record of 4.50m (14-09.00) set in 2014.
After a lightning delay of one hour and twenty minutes Florance Uwajeneza of West Texas A&M broke the Witten Track record in the women's 10,000m run to wrap up the night. Her time of 34:14.47 broke Missouri Western's Madison Nash facility record of 35:22.29 set at the 2022 MIAA Championships

Action at the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships will resume at 9:30 a.m. with the men's decathlon 110m hurdles on Witten Track at Welch Stadium.
