May 6, 2022-After the first day of competition at the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Emporia State has athletes sitting in third place in both the heptathlon and decathlon.
Abigael Reid turned in personal bests in three of the four events on day one of the heptathlon and finds herself in third place with 3029 points. She is just 13 points out of first place. She started the day with a personal best of 14.81 in the 100m hurdles to finish fourth. She then had a PR of 1.64m (5-4.5) in the high jump to finish tied for second as she moved up to third overall. She just missed a PR in the shot put by two centimeters as she threw 10.39m (43-1.25) to place fifth in the event and stay in third overall. She finished the day by shaving half a second off her personal best in the 200m as her 25.69 was good for second in the event and pulled her within 13 points of first place.
Victoria Pettay is in tenth place overall with 2492 points. She turned in a personal best of 27.37 in the 200m to wrap up the day.
For the men
Brandon Wilkes is in third place in the decathlon with 3349 points. He started the day with an 11.81 in the 100m and then went 5.97m (19-7) in the long jump as he found himself in ninth after two events. He came back with a 12.73 (41-9.25) to finish second in the shot put and move up three spaces. He cleared 1.82m (5-11.5) to place fourth in the high jump and move up to fifth overall. He ended the day with a PR by nearly two seconds in the 400m. He ran 50.64 to finish third in the event and move up to third overall after day one.
Coby Smith had two PRs on the day and is in ninth overall with 3055 points. He had a personal best of 6.19m (20-3.75) in the long jump and over a three second improvement in the 400m as he ran 52.96 in the final event.
Overall Hannah Vanbuskirk of Central Missouri leads the heptathlon with 3042 points while Trey Mooney of Pittsburg State leads the decathlon with 3923 points.
Day two of the multi-events starts on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Welch Stadium.
