May 11, 2022-Emporia State Football has announced the selection of team captains for the 2022 season. Four of the six were captains last season.
The captains are selected from the group of Iron Hornet Officers and voted on by the entire team. Receiver
Corey Thomas, S-back
Dalton Cowan, safety
Jaedon Pool, quarterback
Braden Gleason, linebacker
Dawson Hammes and offensive lineman
Conner Lierz earned the honor for the upcoming season.
Gleason and Lierz are in their first year as team captains while Thomas, Cowan, Pool and Hammes served as captains last season. All six earned All-MIAA honors last year.
Thomas was named honorable mention All-MIAA as a receiver last season. He was ranked tenth in the MIAA in total receptions last year catching 44 passes for 501 yards and four touchdowns.
Cowan was named Second-Team All-MIAA at all-purpose back. He only played in six games due to injury but led Emporia State with 55.2 yards per game from his Stinger Back position.
Pool was a Third-Team All-MIAA selection as a defensive back. He was ninth in the MIAA in passed defended and 12th in interceptions.
Gleason was a Third-Team selection after finishing eighth in the nation in total offense, tenth in passing yards, and 13
th in passing touchdowns. He threw for 3,393 yards and 30 touchdowns with 3,727 yards of total offense. He was ranked fourth in single season passing yards, touchdown passes and total offense for Emporia State.
Hammes was an honorable mention All-MIAA linebacker last year. He was fourth in the MIAA in total tackles last season.
Lierz earned Second-Team All-MIAA honors on the offensive line. He was named Emporia State's Squarehead Award winner as the top offensive lineman four times last year and averaged a team best 4.6 knockdowns per game.
The Hornets are scheduled to open the 2022 season on Thursday, September 1 against Northeastern State. Kick-off for the first of six home games on Jones Field at Welch Stadium is set for 7:00 p.m.
