Football | 1/27/2026 11:00:00 AM

January 27, 2026-Emporia State linebacker Landon Boss and defensive back Tyler Schultze have both earned First-Team Academic All-American honors as presented by College Sports Communicators.

Boss is a consensus All-American on the field and has a 3.72 GPA in business as a junior linebacker for the Hornets. He earned First-Team All-American honors from the AFCA, D2CCA, AP, Don Hansen Football Committee, and Walter Camp Football Foundation and was named Second-Team All-American by D2Football.com. Boss was a unanimous selection as a First-Team All-MIAA linebacker, while also winning the Defensive Player of the Year award in the Association. The Osage City, Kan. native tallied 101 tackles on the season, which included ten sacks, 11 quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles, two interceptions and a defensive touchdown.  He led the MIAA in sacks and tackles for loss while ranking second in the league in solo tackles and fourth in total tackles.  His 69 solo tackles are the fifth most in the nation, his 17.5 tackles for loss rank sixth in the nation while his ten sacks are 12th in the nation.

Boss finished the season with ten sacks to rank fourth all-time on the Emporia State single season list. His 18 tackles for loss on the season move him into a tie with Greg Harvey (1993), Leon Brigham (1997) and Gerard Clemons (1998) for fourth on the Emporia State single season TFL list. He tied Patrick Cook (1995) and Gerard Clemons (1997) for the school record with four sacks in a game.

Boss is the only player from the MIAA to be named a First-Team Academic All-American and earn at least Second-Team All-American honors on the field from all six of the major national organizations.

Schultze has a 3.99 GPA in Physics and was named Second-Team All-MIAA at defensive back, following Third Team honors last season. The junior from De Soto, Kan. had 65 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, one interception and 14 pass breakups. He led the MIAA and was 11th in the nation with 1.36 passes defended per game while ranking eight in the MIAA in solo tackles with 4.55 per game. His 14 pass break ups last season rank second all-time at Emporia State while his 25 career breakups rank seventh entering his senior season.

Schultze and Harding senior defensive back Ty Dugger are the only repeat First-Team Academic All-Americans this season. Schultze is the first Hornet football player to earn back-to-back First-Team Academic All-American honors since running back Tyler Paul did it in 2002 and 2003.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games/contests/sets played OR must start in at least 66 percent of the games with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist College Sports Communicators with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2025-26 Division II Academic All-America® program.

Boss and Schultze's Academic All-American honors are the 69th and 70th all-time for Emporia State and brings the number of times a Hornet football player has been honored to 24. This is the tenth straight year Emporia State has had a football player earn Academic All-American honors, the longest active streak in NCAA Division II. They were two of ten players from the MIAA to be honored as an Academic All-American this year.
