March 24, 2022-A current Hornet and a former Hornet lead after the first day of the multi-events at the ESU Relays from Witten Track/Welch Stadium.

Emporia State freshman Abigael Reid has 2,742 points after four events in the women's heptathon for a 106 lead over South Dakota State's Katelyn Darnell after the first day of action. Reid used a consistent performance throughout the day to move into the lead, despite not winning a single event. She started the day with a time of 15.80 in the 100m hurdles to finish second Darnell. She moved into first place by clearing 5-00.50 (1.54m) as she finished third in the high jump. She maintained first overall with a third place finish of 34-02 (10.41m) in the shot put. She finished day one with a 26.19 and third place finish in the 200m get to 2,742 points.

Victoria Pettay is in sixth overall with 2,366 points and
Mary Grace Lassiter is in 11
th place with 1,963 points heading into tomorrow's final three events.

Payson Maydew, who finished third in the nation in the decathlon for Emporia State in 2015, leads the men's decathlon after five events with 3,177 points. He has a ten point lead over South Dakota State's Josh Donahoe. Emporia State freshman
Coby Smith is in fifth place with 1,76 points despite fouling his throws in the shot put and not clearing a bar in the high jump.

Competition will continue on Friday morning with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 10:00 a.m. and the heptathlon long jump at 10:30 a.m. The ESU Relays open field events will begin at 3:00 p.m. with track events set to begin at 4:00 p.m. The majority of the meet will be held on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.
