March 19, 2022-Emporia State had 11 event champions, nine runner-up performances and one provisional qualifier at the ESU Spring Invitational on Saturday at Welch Stadium and Witten Track.
 
Alyssa Conway started things off with a provisional qualifier and championship in the women's hammer.  Her mark of 182-10 (55.73m) is currently ranked third in the nation at this early point in the season.
 
The men's 4x400m relay team ran a solid first time of the year, just missing the provisional mark. Guy Ramos, Jamill Phillips, Jack Watson and Juwan Johnson ran a 3:15.21 to win the event and record the second fastest time in the nation this early in the season.
 
Abigael Reid was just .28 seconds away from a provisional in her first collegiate 400m hurdle race.  She ran 1:02.31 to win the event. Kennedy Smith was second in 1:08.57 for Emporia State.
 
Juwan Johnson had a part in three event championships.  In addition to anchoring the 4x400m relay he led off the 4x100m relay and won the 100m dash.  He joined up with Watson, Billy Ross Jr., and Ramos to run 42.06 for a win in the relay and turned in a 10.69 to win the 100m.
 
Grace Jacobs had to go to a jump off to capture the women's high jump title.  She was tied with Lauryn Hill of Northwest Missouri after they had each cleared 5-01 (1.55m) and had the same misses. They went to a jump off and after both missed their first attempt, Jacobs cleared 5-03 (1.60m) to claim the championship.
 
The quartet of Ashley Wildeman, Lauren Carlson, Jasmine Hurla and Kadaisho Mpwo ran 47.62 to win the women's 4x100m relay.
 
The women's 4x400m relay team of Reid, Hurla, Hollie Marlow and Makenzie Owings ran 3:54.77 to finish second.  They are currently ranked fifth in the nation this early in the season.
 
Megan McMannis and Allie Barrett picked up where they left off in the women's pole vault. McMannis cleared 11-09.75 (3.60m) to win the event while Barrett went over 11-05.75 (3.50m) to claim second place.
 
Aaron Hunt and Coby Smith also went 1-2 in the pole vault for the men.  Hunt cleared 14-07.25 (4.45m) to win while Smith finished one bar below at 14-03.25 (4.35m) to finish second.
 
The Hornets also had a 1-2 finish in the men's 400m hurdles.  Chase Rooney ran 54.05 to win the event while Davion Scott was second in 54.22.  They are both currently ranked in the top ten in the nation after the early meets.
 
Josiah Driggers had the other event championship for Emporia State. He jumped 45-04.50 (13.83m) to win the men's triple jump.
 
Taylor Milleson was second with a mark of 42-07.50 (12.99m) in the women's shot put. 
 
Jaime Diaz ran 15:07.16 to finish second in the men's 5000m run.
 
Kaleb Barber was second with a leap of 22-04.50 (6.82m) in the men's long jump.
 
Nathan Ewing cleared 6-00.75 (1.85m) to finish second in the men's high jump.
 
Emporia State will be back in action next weekend when they play host to the ESU Relays. The multi-events will start things off on Thursday and Friday with the majority of the meet to be held on Saturday on the Golden Oval of Witten Track at Welch Stadium.
