March 19, 2022 – Emporia State split their Saturday doubleheader against Northwest Missouri. The Hornets claimed game one 3-0 before falling to the Bearcats 7-5 in game two.
Game 1
Emporia State and Northwest Missouri locked themselves into a pitching duel throughout game one. After three scoreless innings by both teams, the Hornets struck first.
TJ Racherbaumer doubled into the right center gap with one out and was then drove in by
Kase Johnson who doubled down the right field line.
The Hornets would add their final two runs in the next inning on RBI singles from
Sam Chaput and
Noah Geekie.
Despite the Hornet offense only recording three runs in the game,
Jarrett Seaton handled the Bearcats from the mound. Seaton went 7.0 innings allowing just 4 hits and striking out 4 batters. In relief,
Chandler Ashby and
Carl Aikman combined to pitch the final two innings only just 1 hit and striking out 5 batters with Aikman recording his fourth save of the season.
At the plate,
Sam Chaput led the way with a 3-3 game with a walk, RBI and a run scored.
Game 2
Similar to game one of the doubleheader, both teams were held scoreless in the first two inning before the Hornets struck first in the third inning.
TJ Racherbaumer ripped a two-out RBI single to right field to give Emporia State a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, trouble struck the Hornets as the Bearcats were able to push across five runs on four hits, three walks and a pair of hit batters. Northwest Missouri added another run to extend their advantage over Emporia State to 6-1.
Racherbaumer continued his strong game with a solo home run inside the right field foul pole to trim the deficit to 6-2.
After the Bearcats added another run in the eighth inning, the Hornets got their first two batters on base for the hot-hitting Racherbaumer who would capitalize for a third time in the game. He worked the count full before hitting his second home run of the game, this time a three-run blast to cut the deficit to 7-5.
Emporia State was able to bring the winning run to the plate in the ninth before grounding out to fall short 7-5.
TJ Racherbaumer went 3-4 with 2 home runs, 2 runs scored and 5 RBI.
Noah Geekie also went 3-4 from the plate and scored a run.
Emporia State will take on Northwest Missouri in a rubber match on Sunday afternoon from Glennen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
