HORNETS POWER PAST BEARCATS IN SERIES FINALE

Emporia State hits five homers; win rubber match 7-3 over Northwest Missouri

March 20, 2022 – Emporia State defeated Northwest Missouri to take the series 2-1 with a 7-3 win on Sunday afternoon from Glennen Field.

In the first inning, the Bearcats struck first with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. The Hornets responded with a solo home run of their own from Lukas Rich in the second inning. An RBI fielder's choice from Kase Johnson in the fourth followed by a Kadyn Williams solo home run in the fifth gave the Hornets a 3-1 lead.

Northwest Missouri would trim the deficit in half with an RBI single in the sixth before Emporia State restored the two-run advantage in the bottom of the seventh. Brenden Tauber hit his first home run of the season, the third solo home run of the game to make the score 4-2.

The Bearcats claimed their final run of the game on a solo home run in the eighth before the Hornets gave themselves a few much needed insurance runs.

After a one-out walk by TJ Racherbaumer, Quinn Cherry came to plate for his first at-bat of the game in a pinch-hit situation and lifted a no-doubt home run over the left field fence to make the score 6-3. Later in the inning, Kase Johnson recorded the fifth home run of the game for Emporia State to spread the score to 7-3 over Northwest Missouri.

On the mound, Jared Kengott claimed his first win of the season, going 6.0 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 runs while striking out 5 batters. Noah Geekie went 3.0
innings allowing 1 run and striking out 5 batters to claim his first save of the season.

Eight different Hornets recorded a hit in the game, led by Chandler Bloomer and Sam Chaput who each went 2-4 in the game.

Emporia State will remain home as they are set to take on Northwestern Oklahoma on Tuesday, March 22 from Glennen Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
