PAIR OF FOUR RUN INNINGS FOR HORNETS AS LATE PUSH FALLS SHORT

Three Emporia State home runs not enough as Hornets fall 12-9 against the Riverhawks

February 27, 2022 – Emporia State fell 12-9 to Northeastern State on Sunday afternoon.

Trouble brewed early for Emporia State as Northeastern State got things started with a one-out single by Brock Reller that would be only hit for the Riverhawks in the inning. A trio of walks and a pair of errors allowed Northeastern State to push across five runs in the inning.

The Riverhawks managed two more runs in the second inning thanks to a Brock Reller solo home run and back-to-back doubles by Brayden Rodden and C.D. White.

Emporia State finally struck against Northeastern State in the fifth inning with Quinn Cherry hitting a leadoff home run to left field. Joe Daneff reached after being hit by a pitch and Brenden Tauber would later reach on an error putting runners at first and third. An RBI groundout from Sam Chaput scored Daneff to trim the lead to 8-2. Blake Carroll followed Chaput with a two-run home run over the right field wall to make the score 8-4.

After the Riverhawks boosted their lead in the sixth to 10-4 courtesy of a Colin Klingensmith two-run homerun, the Hornets worked the bases loaded with two outs for Noah Geekie. Geekie answered the call with a line drive grand slam over the left field wall to trim the deficit to 10-8.

Northeastern State worked to double their lead to 12-8 in the ninth inning with a pair of RBI hits.

The Hornets made a late push in the bottom of the ninth with three hits in the inning. Noah Geekie added another RBI to his total to trim the lead to 12-9. Emporia State would ultimately bring the tying run to the plate before Northeastern State closed out the game to take down the Hornets.

Noah Geekie went 3-5 from the plate with a grand slam and 5 RBI on the afternoon. Blake Carroll went 2-5 with 2 RBI and a home run of his own. Quinn Cherry also added a solo home run for the Hornets.

Emporia State will conclude their series with Northeastern State on Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Glennen Field.
