HORNETS HOST HOME OPENER
Emporia State will host a season-opening four games series against Colorado State-Pueblo starting with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 11, followed by single games on Saturday, Feb. 12 and Sunday, Feb. 13.
LAST AT BAT
The Hornets traveled to Edmond, Okla. to participate in the 1st Pitch Invitational. The Hornets went 2-1, winning their first two games against Northern State and Southwestern Oklahoma St. before losing to Oklahoma Baptist.
THE COACHES
Seth Wheeler is in his fourth season as the Hornets head coach and enters with a 59-56 record through three seasons. He is 3-4 against CSU-Pueblo.
Bobby Applegate is 1-2 in his first season as the head coach of the Thunderwolves. Before being named as the head coach, he was an assistant coach for Navy.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
The Hornets are 2-1 on the season. The Hornet offense was led through opening weekend by seniors
Sam Chaput and
Blake Carroll. Chaput hit .455 with three runs scored while Carroll batted .333 with three runs.
Aaron Bechtel took the mound in the opening game against Northern State and threw five one-run innings while striking out seven batters. In the Hornets 3-2 win over Southwestern Oklahoma,
Carl Aikman tallied his first save for Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE THUNDERWOLVES
The Thunderwolves are currently 1-2 on the season. They began their season at the Bob Sloan Classic in Canyon, Texas where they first defeated New Mexico Highlands 18-9 in ten innings before falling 10-3 against Classic host West Texas A&M. They lost their home opener 10-4 against Minot State on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The Thunderwolves offense will be led by corner infielders Reggie Williams and Ty Lewis. Williams tallied a .384 batting average in 2021 including 11 doubles. Lewis tallied his own impressive average, batting .348 in 2021 and also had 11 doubles. Lewis added a trio of home runs and a total of 33 RBI to lead CSU-Pueblo.
SERIES HISTORY
Emporia State leads the all-time series 8-7. The two teams have split the last ten games, all of which have been played in Pueblo, Colo. The last meeting at the Trusler Sports Complex was a 3-0 Hornet win on Feb. 7, 2016
LAST TIME AGAINST CSU-PUEBLO
The Hornets opened the 2021 season against CSU-Pueblo, going 2-2 in a four-game series. Emporia State took the opening game 11-3, before falling 5-3 and 11-10 in both halves of a doubleheader. Emporia State responded with an 8-6 victory, including three runs in the final two innings to secure the series split against the Thunderwolves.
