GAME ONE OF TURNPIKE TUSSLE SERIES GOES TO WASHBURN

Emporia State falls 5-2 in Topeka

April 9, 2021-Game one of the baseball Turnpike Tussle went to Washburn on Friday night as they defeated Emporia State 5-2.

The Hornets loaded the bases on two hit batters and a walk in the top of the first but could not get a run across and left the loaded. Brigham Mooney led off the top of the second by becoming the third Hornet to get hit and with one out Jack Maki got Emporia State's first hit of the night, a two run homer run to right for a 2-0 lead. Kros Bay homered in the bottom of the inning for the Ichabods as they cut the deficit in half.

Eric Hinostroza tied the game with an RBI single in the third. He was caught stealing for the second out of the inning before Parker Dunn gave Washburn a 3-2 lead with solo home run.

Back to back RBI singles by Brett Ingram and Zion Bowlin gave the Ichabods a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth and chased Hornet starter Jared Kengott.  Jarrett Seaton came in and struck out Bay to end the inning.  That would end the scoring, although the Hornets were able to get the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh when Cooper Minnick walked and Chandler Bloomer singled but they would be stranded.  Emporia State left nine runner on base in the game.

Jack Maki was two for four with two RBI and a run scored on his first home run of the year.  Jared Kengott allowed five runs on eight hits through 4.2 innings with six strike outs and only one walk. Jarrett Seaton and Hayden Schaeffer combined to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings with each of them giving up two hits.

The Hornets and Ichabods will meet in a double header on Saturday afternoon at Falley Field to wrap up the series.  First pitch of game one in Topeka is set for 2:00 p.m.
