SERIOUS SERIES
Emporia State and Missouri Western meet at Trusler in a three game series with both teams battling for a spot in the MIAA Baseball Tournament.

LAST AT BAT
Emporia State was only out hit 9-6 but they did not capitalize on their opportunities in a 12-1 loss to Pittsburg State on Tuesday night in non-conference action. Four of the Gorillas hits went for extra bases while the Hornets six hits were all singles.

THE COACHES
Seth Wheeler is 51-46 in his third season as the Hornets head coach. He is 3-2 against Missouri Western.
Buzz Verduzco is 599-472 in his 22nd year as head coach of the Griffons. He is 31-52 against Emporia State.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 11-17, 7-14 in the MIAA. As a team they are hitting .305 with a 7.03 ERA and .956 fielding percentage. As a team they lead the MIAA in stolen bases and rank fourth in batting average. Brady Michel is leading the MIAA with a .436 batting average and ranks second with a .514 on base percentage. He has reached base safely in 21 straight games. Blake Carroll is leading the nation with six triples. Cooper Minnick is tenth in the MIAA with 28 runs scored. Brigham Mooney is batting .432 with 13 runs scored and 15 RBI over the last ten games. Jake Barton is seventh in the MIAA with 47 strikeouts in 41.1 innings.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFONS
Missouri Western is 8-19 overall with a 6-15 mark in MIAA play. As a team, the Griffons have a .261 batting average, a 6.19 staff ERA, and .953 team fielding percentage. Alex Crouch is seventh in the MIAA in batting average at .392 and eighth with a .696 slugging percentage. Bailey Crump is third in the league with ten home runs while Maurice Bruce is third with four triples. Roy Robles is 2-2 on the year with a 5.64 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 30.1 innings.

LAST AT BAT AGAINST MO. WESTERN
Emporia State's Jake Barton took a no hitter into the sixth and allowed one run on three hits in eight innings but Missouri Western's Casey Danley hit a three run homer in the top of the ninth as the Hornets fell 4-2 to the Griffons in the 2019 MIAA Tournament. Barton hit Zach Pych to lead off the top of the sixth and Danley broke up the no hitter with a single through the right side that sent him to third.  After a line out to first Dusty Stroup hit a sac fly to plate Pych and give the Griffons a 1-0 lead. In the sixth Aaron Dees, Tucker Perkins and Paul Claassen all walked to load the bases. Tanner Arst then delivered a single that scored two runs to give the Hornets the lead. Danley delivered a three run homer with two outs in the ninth to give Western a 4-2 lead.

The Hornets travel to Northeastern State next weekend. The three game series starts at 11 a.m.on Saturday in Tahlequah, Okla.
