EMPORIA STATE BASEBALL CAN NOT CAPITALIZE IN MIDWEEK LOSS TO PITTSBURG STATE

Hornets are only out hit 9-6 in 12-1 loss to Gorillas

April 13, 2021-Emporia State was only out hit 9-6 but they did not capitalize on their opportunities in a 12-1 loss to Pittsburg State on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

Even though Hornet starter Zachary Ebert had three strikeouts in the first inning, the Gorillas scored three runs on three hits in opening frame.  Garrett McGowan had the big hit in the inning, a two run homer to right.  The Hornets got two runners on with a Cooper Minnick walk and a Chandler Bloomer single but a double play ended the inning.

Pitt State added another run in the top of the third when Cruz Aranda tripled to lead off the inning and then scored on a wild pitch. A wild pitch and an error led to three more Gorilla runs in the fourth.  McGowan walked, stole second and went to third on a Dawson Pomeroy single.  A wild pitch scored McGowan and allowed Pomeroy to go to second.  Two ground outs later Pomeroy scored to make it 6-0.  The Hornets could have been out of the inning but Mason Hartman reached on an error at short and would eventually score on a single by Aranda to make it 7-0.

The Hornets got on the board in the fourth. Bloomer and Brady Michel led off with back to back singles to put runners at first and third.  Sam Chaput hit a goudn ball to second and beat out a high throw at first as Bloomer scored to make it 7-1. The Gorillas then put the game away with five runs on three hits and three walks in the top of the seventh, all with two outs.

Emporia State will be back in action this weekend with a three game series against Missouri Western.  The first game is scheduled for Friday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Trusler Sports Complex, weather permitting.
