Emporia State travels to Wichita to take on Newman in a three game MIAA series.

LAST AT BAT
Emporia State led 5-0 going to the bottom of the fifth, trailed 7-5 after seven, scored five in the top of the eighth and gave up a two run homer in the bottom of the ninth on the way to a 10-9 win at Pittsburg State. Brady Michel went three for five with two RBI, a run scored, a walk and a double.  Cooper Minnick was two for three, was hit three times, scored three runs, stole two bases and had an RBI. Brigham Mooney was three for four with three doubles, a run and an RBI.  Coleton Crisp worked the final 2.1 innings to get the win.

THE COACHES
Seth Wheeler is 48-42 in his third season as the Hornets head coach. He is 2-1 against Newman.
Drew Maus is 12-25 in his second season at Newman. This is his first meeting with Emporia State.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 8-13, 4-11 in the MIAA. As a team they are hitting .290 with a 6.13 ERA and .951 fielding percentage. Brady Michel is second in the MIAA in batting average at .441 and ranks seventh with a .500 on base percentage. He enters the weekend on an 11 game hitting streak. Blake Carroll is leading the nation with five triples. Jake Barton is 3-3 with a 3.44 ERA and 44 strikeouts while Jarred Kengott is 1-4 with a 4.28 ERA and 29 strikeouts. Drew Repp is 1-1 with a 5.51 ERA and 24 strikeouts.

SCOUTING THE JETS
Newman is 4-10 overall with a 3-9 mark in MIAA play. As a team, the Jets are batting .287 with a team ERA of 9.08 and a .953 fielding percentage. Hayden VandePol is batting .432 with a .659 slugging percentage and .510 on base percentage. Derek Schumann is 1-1 with a 6.85 ERA in four starts.

SERIES HISTORY
Emporia State leads the all-time series 54-19 over Newman. The Hornets had won 12 straight before a midweek loss in 2019.

LAST AT BAT AGAINST NEWMAN
Emporia State could not overcome a six run third inning by Newman in a 13-6 loss to the Jets. The Jets sent 11 men to the plate in the top of the third to score six runs on five hits, two walks and two Hornet errors.  The Jets would add another run in the top of the fourth before the Hornets got two back in the bottom of the inning.  The Jets added two more runs in the top of the sixth and Emporia State answered with three of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Newman answered immediately in the top of the seventh with a three run homer by Paul Rupnick to take a 13-6 lead. Tyrus Barclay was two for two with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI while Brian Grove was two for four with two runs scored.

The Hornets head to Topeka next weekend to take on Washburn in a three game MIAA series. First pitch of game one is set for 5:00 p.m. at Falley Field on the Washburn campus.
