HOME OPENER
Emporia State makes their 2021 home debut when they play host to Wayne State (Neb.) on Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex. This is a rescheduled game to make up for games lost at the Edmond First Pitch Classic.

LAST AT BAT
Emporia State was shut out for the second time in three games as they fell 7-0 on Sunday at #19 Missouri Southern.
The Hornets were no hit into the fifth inning when Sam Chaput reached on a single.  Emporia State starter Drew Repp was nearly as good allowing one run on two hits through the first five innings.  The Lions broke through for four runs on three hits in the sixth inning and added two more in the bottom of the eighth.

THE COACHES
Seth Wheeler is 42-34 in his third season as the Hornets head coach. This is his first meeting with Wayne State.
Alex Koch is 132-127 in his seventh year as head coach for the Wildcats. This is his first meeting with Emporia State.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 2-5 on the season after getting swept by #19 Missouri Southern last weekend.
Brady Michel is batting .429 with a 1.172 OPS and team high six RBI in just five games. Chandler Bloomer is hitting .375 with a homer, six runs and five RBI while Jack Maki is hitting .318 with five RBI.
Jarred Kengott is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and 13 strikeouts while Jake Barton has a 3.60 ERA and 16 strikeouts. Alex DeBey is 1-1 with a 0.00 ERA in three appearances out of the bullpen.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
This will be the season opener for Wayne State. They were picked fifth in the NSIC preseason poll. The Wildcats were 8-7 in non-conference play last season when the reminder of the 2020 schedule was canceled due to the COVID pandemic.
Andrew Hanson hit .343 with nine doubles, four homers and 15 RBI last season and is a two time All-NSIC selection. Ryan Obrecht was 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA in 12.2 innings. He earned All-NSIC First Team honors as a freshman.

SERIES HISTORY
The Hornets lead the all-time series 22-7 but have not met in over ten years. They have met five times in the NCAA Regional Tournament with Emporia State winning the last three postseason meetings..

LAST TIME AGAINST WAYNE STATE
Kenny Burkhead and Travis Whipple each went two for four and David Albritton drove in two runs with a sac fly and a squeeze bunt as Emporia State defeated Wayne State 4-2 on March 16, 2010 at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Matt Robertson allowed two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings to pick up the win.  Colby Killian faced the minimum over the final 3.0 innings, allowing one hit that was erased with a double play to pick up the save.

UP NEXT
The Hornets travel to Northwest Missouri this weekend. The series starts with a double header on Saturday, March 6 starting at 1:00 p.m. and will conclude with a single game in Maryville, Mo. on Friday, March 5 at 1:00 p.m. on Bearcat Field.
