May 27, 2020-On this day in 2006 Emporia State wrapped up the third of three NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships contested at Welch Stadium/Witten Track.  As part of the 100th Centennial of the NCAA, the event began with a banquet for over 1,000 and USTFCCCA Hall of Fame induction ceremony in ESU's Memorial Union, an ice cream social after Thursday's action along with a flyover and fireworks at the conclusion of the meet on Saturday.
 
The Hornets earned a total of seven All-American honors and one national championship competing on their home track and runways.
 
2006 ESU MOTF Andy Vogelsberg and Heather Leverington Performance BoardJunior Andy Vogelsberg turned in the second best performance in championship meet history in the men's javelin with a throw of 245-03 for his first national championship. Trenton Olivier placed seventh in the discus to give Emporia State a total of 12 points and a 23rd place showing in the men's team standings.
 
Sophomore Shannon Butler earned a pair of All-American honors.  She was seventh in the long jump with a jump of 19-3.50 and anchored the 4x100m relay team to a seventh place finish as well.  She teamed with juniors Kara Euler, Danielle Sedivy and Ashley Melichar to run a then school record of 46.15 in the prelims as Emporia State placed 44th in the women's team standings.
 
Emporia State had four other student-athletes competing on their home track for a total of ten athletes in 11 events.  Butler just missed another All-American honor when she finished ninth in the women's 100m in 11.90 to rank second at the time and still set third on the Emporia State all-time list. Junior Cameron Babb scored 6,639 points to finish ninth in the decathlon and was less than 100 points away from finishing in eighth and earning All-American honors. He also placed 15th in the javelin.
 
Kara Euler was the busiest competitor for the Emporia State women as she ran in the 200m and 400m in addition to the 4x100m relay for the women. Sophomore Jonel Rossbach qualified for the finals in the 1500m and placed 12th overall while senior Kristen Larson just missed the finals with a 13th place finish in the 3000m. Sophomore Eric Wellman qualified for the finals in the men's 1500m and finished in 12th place.
 
Abilene Christian scored 22 points in the final three events to post a two and a half point victory over St. Augustine's in the men's team competition. The Lincoln women won the 100m, 200m, 400m and both relays to post a seven point win over Abilene Christian. It was the fifth of seven straight national championships for the Wildcat men and the fourth in a string of five straight wins for the Blue Tiger women.

2006 ESU TF Distance Runners at NCAA ChampionshipsThere were four meet records broken over the three days of competition beginning with Wilbert Walker's 26-08.25 non-wind aided mark in the long jump in the first final completed on Thursday. The sophomore from Lincoln came back with a wind aided triple jump mark of 55-04.25 that is the farthest triple jump in NCAA Division II history regardless of conditions. Seven of the top 20 triple jump marks in NCAA Championship history regardless of conditions occurred during the 2006 meet. Keith Moffatt of Morehouse cleared 7-6.00 (2.29m) for a meet record in the high jump that remains second all-time in Championship history. Seattle Pacific's Chris Randolph scored 7,872 points to win the decathlon, at the time the most points scored in the multi-event since the change to the javelin in 1986 and still ranked second in championships history. Walker was joined by Nicodemus Naimadu of Abilene Christian as double winners on the men's side with victories in the 3000m steeplechase in 8:59.090 and the 5000m in 14:47.90.

2006 NCAA TF Championships Janika Martell of Lincoln in 100mLincoln's Davita Pendergast ran a 51.29 in the 400m, a time that remains the top mark in Division II Championship history. Lynnsey Dailey of Ft. Valley State set a then meet record in the 400 hurdles with a time of 57.18 for one of her two individual championships in the meet. Dailey also won the 100m hurdles in 13.46, placed sixth in the 100m in 11.82 and was one of five double event winners for the women. Cecilia Barnes of Cal. State-Bakersfield was the high point scorer for the meet with 25 points. She won the discus and hammer and placed fourth in the shot put. Her 183-8 (55.99m) set a Championships meet record. The other double event winners for the women were Janika Martell of Lincoln in the 100m in 11.28 and 200m at 23.21, Adams State's Victoria Martinez with a time of 2:08.80 in the 800m and 4:35.17 in the 1500m while Mandi Zemba of Grand Valley State won the 3000m in 9:27.01 and 5000m with a time of 17:10.69.
