1995 ESU T&F Welch Stadium infield for NCAA ChampionshipsMay 25, 2020-On this day in 1995 Emporia State played host to their first of their three NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships at Welch Stadium/Witten Track.  An organizing committee of 50 along with over 200 volunteers and officials from across the country helped put on the three day meet for nearly 450 athletes representing 72 schools.
 
The Hornet men had five All-American honors and placed ninth in the nation while Laura Rand won Emporia State's first D-II National Championship to lead the women to a 13th place finish in the team standings.
 
The javelin competition was very good for the Emporia State men as junior John Corwin finished second and senior Johnathan Oshel was seventh. Corwin's mark of 241-1 was second to Kirt Thompson of Ashland's winning throw of 249-06 as they ranked first and second all-time in NCAA Division II at the time. Jason Stuke earned two All-American honors for the Hornet men as a sophomore. He placed third in the discus and fifth in the shot as a sophomore. Senior Jurmaine Mitchell finished second in the 10,000m run behind Charles Mulinga of Lewis who won the event in 28:26.56, which still stands as the Division II Championships meet record.
 
1995 ESU WT&F Laura Rand discusJunior Laura Rand gave Emporia State their first NCAA Division II individual championship with a mark of 47-9.75 in the women's shot put.   Freshmen Joyce Burnett was fifth in the javelin for the women while Deandra Doubrava earned the first of her 14 All-American honors for the Hornets with a fifth place finish in the 400m.
 
In the overall competition the Saint Augustine's men won their seventh straight team title with 140.5 points to easily outdistance second place Abilene Christian who had 95 points. Three men won multiple individual championships – Marlin Cannon of Saint Augustine's in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay; Savieri Ngidhi of Abilene Christian in the 800m and 1500m; and Charles Mulinga in the 5000m and 10000m m.
 
For the women Abilene Christian won the middle championship of a three-peat, scoring 106.5 points for a 35.5 victory over Cal. State-LA. Five women won multiple championships – Chandra Sturrup of Norfolk State in the 200m, long jump and 4x400m relay; Mary Tombiri-Shirey from Abilene Christian in the 100m and 4x100m relay; Revoli Campbell from Abilene Christian in the 400m and 4x100m relay; Mirsada Buric-Adams of Adams State won the 1500m and 5000m; and Karlene Haughton of Saint Augustine's won the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
