April 18, 2018-After the first day of competition at the 91
st Kansas Relays, Payson Maydew and Brianna Schmitz are both in fifth place in the decathlon and heptathlon for Emporia State. Maydew has 3180 points in the decathlon while Tanner Raubenstine is seventh with 3136 points after five events. Schmitz has 2582 points after four events in the heptathlon.
Raubenstine started the day strong with a third place finish in the 100m in 11.21 and fourth place spot with a mark of 21-5.25 (6.53m) in the long jump. He then placed 12
th in the shot put at 31-8 (9.65m) before clearing 5-8.75 (1.75m) for seventh in the high jump. He wrapped up the day with a 55.78 in the 400m that was good for ninth.
Maydew started off a bit slow on the day with an 11.71 showing in the 100m for tenth place and finishing 13
th at 19-7 (5.97m) in the long jump. Things started to turn in the shot put as he went 38-9.50 (11.82m) to place third. He cleared 5-7.75 (1.72m) to place ninth in the high jump before finishing second in 51.74 in the 400m.
Schmitz used good performances on the track for her first day total. She was fifth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.56 in the first event of the day. She was tenth after clearing 4-9.75 (1.47m) in the high jump and then placed ninth with a mark of 32-0.75 (9.77m) in the shot put. She ended the day running 27.01 to place fourth in the final event of the day the 200m.
The multis will continue on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. with the 110m hurdles in the decathlon and the heptathlon long jump. The Hornets will also be competing in field events starting at 10:00 a.m. with running events in the distance carnival set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
