Hornets fall 11-3 to Griffons

April 17, 2018- Emporia State baseball fell 11-3 on Tuesday Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. The Hornets were out hit 14-7 and had four errors in the game.

The Hornets got on the board first with one run in the top of the first inning. Brian Grove doubled to left field and advanced when Mack Gowing was hit by a pitch. Mason Brown walked to load the bases before Kaden Shaffer hit a sacrifice fly to center field which brought Grove in for the score. The Griffons answered quick with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the 2-1 lead.

The Hornets took the lead 3-2 with two runs in the top of the third inning. Grove singled through the right side to start the inning for the Hornets and advanced to third when Gowing singled through the right side. Bryce Fischer hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Grove. Gowing advanced to second when Shaffer hit a single through the left side and scored when Trevor Turner singled to right field. In the bottom of the inning the Griffons tied the game with one run on one hit and one error by the Hornets.

After exchanging outs in the fourth inning the Griffons took control of the game scoring one run in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Griffons got six runs in the bottom of the seventh to finish the game 11-3.

At the plate the Hornets got seven hits led by Brian Grove with two hits and two runs in four at bats. Mack Gowing, Bryce Fischer, Kaden Shaffer, Trevor Turner and Tanner Arst each added one hit for the Hornets.

Max Simpson started on the mound for the Hornets and took the loss pitching 5.1 innings allowing five runs on nine hits with three K's before being replaced by Trey Taylor. Taylor pitched 0.2 innings allowing no runs and no hits before being replaced by Adam Thies. Thies allowed two runs on one hit with two erros before being replaced by Nathan Gieber. Gieber pitched 0.2 innings allowing two runs on two hits. Drew Scrimsher came in to pitch 0.1 innings allowing two runs on two hits. Brendan Janes pitched the final inning for the Hornets allowing no runs and no hits.

The Hornets will be back in action April 19-21 as they trave to Warrensburg, Mo to take on Central Missouri.
