February 18, 2018- Emporia State wins their sixth straight as the Hornets take down the Jets 10-7 to complete the series sweep.
The Jets opened up the game up with a home run and an RBI sac fly in the first inning to give them an early 2-0 lead. After giving up two runs in the top of the fourth, the Hornets got on the board with an RBI groundout from Kyle Lopez. The Hornets picked up a run in each of the next two innings to cut the Jets' lead to 4-3. Newman scored another two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Hornets responded with seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-6 lead. The Jets would get a run in the top half of the eight, but that's all they would get as Mason LeClair would close out the game for his second save of the season.
Bryce Fischer led the Hornets on three of five hitting with three RBI and two doubles. Kaden Shaffer went two for five at the plate with two runs scored to give him a total of nine on the season. Adam Theis started on the mound for the Hornets and struck out six hitters in his 3.2 innings pitched. Max Simpson picked up his first win of the season as he pitched 3.1 innings with four strikeouts. The Hornets swept their second straight series to improve to 6-4 on the year.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, February 23 as they travel to Northwest Missouri to start a three-game series with the Bearcats. First pitch from Maryville, Mo. is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
