EMPORIA STATE FALLS 12-11 IN 13 INNINGS TO LINDENWOOD

Hornets overcome 6-0 hole to force extra innings

May 20, 2017-In a battle of the MIAA regular season and tournament champions Emporia State dug themselves a 6-0 hole after three innings and came back to take a 9-6 lead before falling 12-11 to Lindenwood in 13 innings at the NCAA Division II Baseball Central Regional at the Trusler Sports Complex.

Lindenwood struck first as Drew Quinones hit a home run to center field driving home Ryan Sosnowski in the top of the first. They would plate two more in the top of the second as Paul Sherwood had an RBI bunt and Wes Degener hit a sacrifice fly.
 
The Lions scored another two runs in the top of the third as Kyle Teter tripled to right field and then scored on an Emporia State error. The Hornets would cut into that lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as back-to-back doubles from Mack Gowing and Kaden Shaffer plated two.
 
The Hornets tied the game up with four in the bottom of the fifth inning as BJ Dean led off the inning with a home run that cleared the scoreboard in right field. Ryan McBroom would follow that up three hitters later with a three run shot to right field.
 
The Hornets would take their first lead of the game as Taylor Sanagorski doubled down the first base line driving in two in the sixth inning. Levi Ashmore then doubled to almost the same spot to give the Hornets a 9-6 advantage over the Lions.
 
Lindenwood would tie the game back up in the top of the eight with a three-run home run from Conor Behrens that drove home Kyle Teter and Ryan Sosnowski.
 
The Hornets would jump back ahead in the bottom of the eighth as Sanagorski hit a home run to deep right center field driving home BJ Dean. Lindenwood would come right back in the top of the ninth as Ryan Sosnowski had an RBI groundout followed by a double to left center by Quinones to send the game to extra innings.
 
The Lions would load the bases in the top of the 12th with no outs, but it was erased by a 6-4-3 double play that ended the half inning. LLindenwood would break the tie in the top of the 13th inning when Behrens hit a high chopper to shortstop driving home pinch runner Brett Anderson.

Alex White was four of six with two runs scored while Levi Ashmore went three for seven with a run and an RBI.  Taylor Sanagorski was two for three with three RBI and two runs scored off the bench. Matt Slauter worked the final 2.0 innings and gave up the game winning run to suffer his first loss of the season.

Drew Quinones went three for five with two runs scored and three runs driven in while Conor Behrens had four runs driven in. On the mound Connor Law pitched the final 7.2 innings in relief to pick up the victory.

The Hornets will take on Central Oklahoma in an elimination game at approximately 5:30 on Saturday afternoon.
