September 3, 2014-A one-time staple of Emporia State tennis is making a comeback this weekend with the return of the Chicken Dinner Tournament. East Central (Okla.), UMKC, Rockhurst, and Newman along with MIAA members Washburn, Northwest Missouri and Neb.-Kearney will join the Hornets for the two day event.
The tournament got it's name from former Hornet coach George Milton who originated the tournament. Coach Milton would invite the teams to his home at the end of the first day of action for a chicken dinner. This year Emporia's Pizza Ranch will provide a meal of chicken and pizza for the teams at the end of Friday's action.
The tournament will be broken down into individual and singles brackets. Action will be on the Emporia HS Courts on Friday, September 5 and Saturday, September 6.
The Emporia State women were 16-9 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history. They return two honorable mention All-MIAA players in Tawni Griffey and Amy Fugit. The Hornet men were 9-10 last year and return second-team All-MIAA performer Payton Hays.
