MIAA Double Sweep For Emporia State Tennis at Newman

Hornet men and women both win 7-0 over Jets

March 28, 2026-The Emporia State tennis teams got back on the winning track with a pair of sweeps in MIAA play at Newman on Saturday afternoon.
 
ESU Men 7, Newman 0
The Hornet men rolled to 7-0 win over the Jets at the Riverside Tennis Courts. 
Anton Sarunic and Luke West started things with a quick 6-1 win at #1 doubles.  Mostafa Elbasnaly and Diego Calvo gave the doubles point to the Hornets with a 6-3 win at the #2 position before Duvan Santiago Torres and Gwenal Mazuay finished with a 6-3 win at #3.
Roko Kacer won 6-0, 6-1 at #5 singles and Santiago Torres won 6-1, 6-1 at #6 to give Emporia State a 3-0 lead.  Elbasnaly clinched the dual win with a 6-2, 6-2 win at #1 singles.  Sarunic was leading 6-2, 5-0 when he won by retirement at #2 singles to give the Hornets a 5-0 lead.  Calvo and West both won three set matches to complete the sweep.  Calvo won 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) at #3 while West picked up a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9) win at #4 singles to finish out the 7-0 victory.
 
ESU Women 7, Newman 0
The Hornet women took care of business against a short handed Jets team for a 7-0 win.
Newman could only field two doubles teams so Emporia State only had to win one of the contested matches. Both Carla Paul Piquer and Giovanna Ferreira at #1 and Sheriden Wichman and Yuliya Klimova at #2 won 6-2 to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead after doubles.
With no one in the #6 spot for the Jets, Emporia State started singles with a 2-0 lead. Paul Piquer won 6-0, 6-1 at #3 and Erin Cahill won 6-1, 6-3 at #5 for 4-0 lead and clinch of the dual.  Ferreira won 6-4, 6-3 at #1, Klimova picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at #2 and Giulia Russu won 6-4, 7-5 at #4 singles for a 7-0 dual win.
 
UP NEXT
The Emporia State women will play host to Fort Hays State on Thursday, April 2 at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex. The Hornet men's next action will be against Neb.-Kearney on Friday, April 3 with first serve set for 11:00 a.m. and the women to follow at the Kossover Family Tennis Complex.
